Assignment: As a Registered Dietitian, you have been invited to a “Lunch and Learn” program at a very large law firm. The firm must make a decision about which company they will select for a year long beverage contract. The lawyers have three choices: water, Gatorade or Powerade. Out of the 55 attorneys that will be attending your presentation, 32 of them workout regularly, about 60 minutes, five days per week.
The title of your presentation is: "Water: An Overlooked Essential Nutrient." The firm has requested that you address all of the questions mentioned in the introductory paragraph while creating a handout or essay that compares/contrasts water, Gatorade and Powerade. Being properly hydrated is something that can be the barrier between life and death. I have ran track for eight plus years. Those eight plus years entailed two to three hour practices Monday through Friday and all day track meets on the weekends in the blazing sun. Being a part of this sport for so long has allowed me to work with numerous coaches who have their own methods and hydration beliefs, that they swear are the most effective. Throughout all my years, I have never explicitly been told that I was not able to have water during a workout but I did have a coach who limited our water consumption. He was concerned with athletes cramping up or vomiting because they were running with too much water in their stomachs too close to practice…

Water maintains body temperature, maintains blood volume, blood pressure and supports all cell functions. (Cherif, et al., 2010)Water is a valuable resource even in an office environment. (European Hydration Institute)No other drink is as affective in hydrating the body like water. Gatorade and Powerade both have high levels of added sugar and salt. This means less oxygen for muscles and the brain, causing a significant loss in cognition and energy. In 2005 Susan Shirreffs analyzed several studies related to athletic performance and hydration. The results of these studies vividly illustrate how dehydration impairs all aspects of athletics. Experiments were conducted that had athletes run for several miles at certain levels of hydration and dehydration. Shirreffs found that with as little as a two percent reduction in body mass due to water loss athletes performed significantly worse as their dehydration continued. Not only did dehydration cause a reduction in athleticism, but it was found motivation to exercise was influenced (2011). This is due to waters affect on endurance and blood flow. Without proper hydration blood flow is slowed and less oxygen is carried throughout the muscles. This causes significant and noticeable pain due to the cramping of muscles and the lessening of joint lubrication. Athletes studied with proper hydration were found to perform at much higher standards and with increased motivation. This means that by drinking water athletic performance can be increased exponentially (Kalman, 2010; Keneflick, 2012). All studies in this article point towards hydration being a critical factor for athletes to perform efficiently. Also, studies were cited that concluded hydration has a…
