Nursing Leadership And Patient Outcomes Case Study
Appraising the Relationship Between Nursing Leadership and Patient Outcomes
Wong, Cummins and Ducharme (2013) conducted a systematic review of studies in 2013 to examine the relationship between “nursing leadership practices and patient outcomes” (p.710). With an intent to improve patient outcomes, the authors had conducted a similar review in the past; however, limited results of studies warranted additional research on this topic. Their study involved extracting and analyzing a variety of leadership skills and patient outcomes; through a systematic review. Utilizing online bibliographic databases for the selected search criteria, a total of “20383 titles/abstracts” yielded in their result field (Wong et al., 2013, p. 713). After a laborious evaluation, 121 articles went through a rigorous 0-17-point system analysis and 13 studies were found to be reviewed. The 13 studies plus seven from their original study, created the 20 total studies that were retained for their final analysis.

The ANA strives for individuals to reach their highest potential; therefore, the relationship between leadership qualities and patient outcomes is linear to their own goals (ANA, 2017). Our current practice has evolved from the original leadership theories of the 1900’s to the role of leaders in the 21st century. The one big change that has taken place after all this time is the role and responsibilities of the nursing leaders. The authors present this complex issue as they recommend that the nursing leaders of today need to provide “vision, support, staffing resources and leadership with health competencies, abilities, knowledge, skills and motivation” (Wong et al., 2013, p. 709).
