Nurse Scholarship Essay
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a nurse. I was dead set on being helpful behind the scenes. I craved to fill the role of the nurse who was in the background, helping out by doing the small, unimportant jobs. I felt I was not good enough to fill a higher position. This was before I began actually assuming the role of a volunteer in my community.
Volunteering at Lincoln County Mercy Hospital has taught me a lot of lessons and skills. I began on the MED/Surg floor. I was there to wait hand and foot on the patients and make as many copies as the nurses need. But, I soon began to realize this was not the environment for me. From there, I transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. I was inspired by the roles these nurses played. Each one of them had special connections to the patients and their families. They were there for anything anybody needed at the most stressful times in their lives. But, I still did not feel like this was my calling.

However, I also learned so much more. I learned how to be a leader. As I continued on this path, leadership became combined with service. As more people came in to help and volunteer, they looked up to me. As the more experienced individual, I showed these young men and women to bring service into their line of work. I led by example, showing them the best attributes a leader should have. I also led them by connection by talking one on one and learning to relate to them. I let them know that everybody makes mistakes and I was no different. I was not any better than them, and if they worked for it, they would one day be in my position. The most important thing I did as a leader was lead them to be leaders. That way in the future, more people will know how to lead the correct way and spread the idea that volunteering isn’t about work or recognition, but to better the community that surrounds
