If I would be questioned if I will in favor for nuclear power plant, I would say yes. Because Nuclear energy is the world's largest source of emission-free energy. Nuclear power plants produce no controlled air pollutants, such as sulfur and particulates, or greenhouse gases. The use of nuclear energy in place of other energy sources helps to keep the air clean, preserve the Earth's climate, avoid ground-level ozone formation and prevent acid rain. Of all energy sources, nuclear energy has perhaps the lowest impact on the environment, including water, land, habitat, species, and air resources. Nuclear energy is the most eco-efficient of all energy sources because it produces the most electricity relative to its environmental impact.
Nuclear power is safe and even though there have been two serious accidents in Pennsylvania and Chernobyl, these are but sporadic incidents when compared to the rate of accidents which occur in fossil fuel industries, coal mines and gas pipelines which have a history of eruption. One of the main benefits of nuclear power is that it is an extremely reliable source of power because most nuclear reactors have a life cycle of 40 years which can be easily extended further for 20 more years. The availability of nuclear power is competitive compared to other sources of power like oil and gas since the cost of the nuclear fuel is a small part of the total reaction and therefore even if there is a slight fluctuation in the market the entire reaction need not be affected. Even though there are principal risks associated with nuclear power arise from health effects of radiation. This radiation consists of subatomic particles traveling at or near the velocity of light---186,000 miles per second. They can penetrate deep inside the human body where they can damage biological cells and thereby initiate a cancer. If they strike sex cells, they can cause genetic diseases in progeny.     Nuclear power uses unstable elements like uranium. Uranium is constantly going through a process called nuclear decay, which means the atom is splitting apart over a period of time, measured in half-lives. This is why it is the element of choice for nuclear power plants. Uranium is special because it can go through what is called induced fission. Induced fission is when a free neutron is fired at an atom (like uranium). The atom will absorb the neutron, and immediately becomes unstable and splits apart.     The only two major accidents evolving nuclear power plants were in Chernobyl, Ukraine and Fukushima, Japan. A fluke earthquake followed by a tsunami caused the Fukushima leak, in which the waves crashed against a nuclear facility and disable the systems used to cool the nuclear fuel. Zero deaths have resulted from the accident because the Japanese government responded rapidly in evacuating people and stopping food shipments immediately, things the Soviet government did not do after Chernobyl. Fukushima is a perfect example of when a fluke accident causing a nuclear leak the proper response can stop a disaster. The other incidence, Chernobyl, was caused by human error and an improper response by the Soviet government. The operators ran the nuclear power plant at a very low power, without following safety precautions and alerting the safety personal, which caused the power surge that started a fire. The fire burned, while releasing radiation into the atmosphere, for ten days. The Chernobyl power plant also did not have a containment structure, which would have contained most of the radioactive material, like most other nuclear power plants. Also, the Soviet government did not stop the shipment of food containing radioiodine immediately.
