NT1210 Lab 3.1 Review
Vance Campbell
NT1210 – Intro to Networking
Lab 3.1 to 3.4
3.1

1. Why would a three-layer model of communication that has the layers physical, network, and application be insufficient to adequately describe network communication?

A. Because there is no transport or application layer.

2. What is the history of the OSI reference model? How did it come about and why was it created? Use your textbook and Internet research to support your answer.

A. It was created to standardize the way networks communicate.

3. What is the history of the TCP/IP model? Why was it created? Use your textbook and Internet research to support your answer.

A. The model was to show the standard procedures and made it so people could understand how it worked.

3.2

1. How does the abstraction of the physical layer facilitate interoperability across networks using different types of physical wires?

A. There may not be areas where wires can access, but there is always wireless capabilities.

2. The OSI model is not directly implemented in networking and often the distinction between the layers will blur in implementation. Why does it endure despite these issues? Use your textbook and Internet research to justify your answer.

A. The model helps visualize what is happening. It endures because it is a set a proven model.

3. Given the purpose of each, is it necessary to retain the top three layers of the OSI model as separate entities? Use the textbook and Internet research to justify your answer.

A. The layers are all about how the application handles data, not the network, which is what the model demonstrates. They could be combined or separated.

3.3

1. UDP is a connectionless protocol, unlike TCP, so there is no feedback on whether a packet was received. When would this type of protocol be useful and what is the benefit of using it? Use your textbook and Internet research to draw your conclusions.

A. UDP is suitable for applications that need fast, efficient transmission, such as games. UDP's stateless nature is also useful for servers that answer small queries from huge numbers.

2. HTTP is the common protocol used to retrieve web resources in a web browser. This runs over TCP/IP networks using TCP. What characteristics of TCP make its use in this situation desirable? Use your textbook and Internet research to draw your conclusions.

A. TCP is suited for applications that require high reliability, and transmission time is relatively less critical. TCP has protocols in place that allow data to be transferred to and from connecting devices.

3.4

1. Wireshark gives you the ability to save captured traffic. This can be a great benefit to network administrators, but it can also pose a security risk. What kind of security risks does this present? Use your textbook and Internet research to support your conclusion.

A.

2. The frame encapsulates all other information from the higher layers of the network communication. What kind of information on the network layer encapsulation is available in Wireshark?

A.

It explains the framework used to connect different types of systems. That is, it allows clients and servers to communicate even if they are using different applications and operating systems; all they need is a common protocol, such as TCP/IP. 3. The Session layer establishes, maintains, and terminates user connections. The Transport layer ensures the precise delivery of data through flow control, segmentation and reassembly, error correction, and acknowledgement. “The lower layers may drop packets, but the transport layer performs a sequence check on the data and ensures that if a 12MB file is sent, the full 12MB is received.” (OSI model, “2009, p.01). The Network layer establishes network connections and translates network addresses into their physical counterparts and determines routing. In order to provide services to the Data Link layer, it must convert the logical network address into physical machine addresses, and vice versa on the receiving computer. The Data Link layer packages data in frames appropriate to network transmission method. “The data link is…

The Data Link Layer offers the function to move data between networks and make corrections to errors that could possibly occur during the Physical Layer. This layer was meant for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint media characteristics of a wide area media in the telephone system. On the third layer which is the Network Layer, the addressing and routing is executed. One of the best known examples of the Network Layer is the IP (Internet Protocol). On the Transport Layer of the OSI model is where the flow control and the error handling is achieved. An example is the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). On the Session Layer, the assemblies, and synchronizations are complete.…

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defined the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model to standardize networking of devices from different vendors. The OSI reference model is mostly an architecture blueprint that networking and computer device manufacturers implement. The OSI model has never been implemented exactly as defined. The TCP/IP protocol stack is the closest implementation available today.…

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model (ISO/IEC 7498-1) is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the internal functions of a communications system by partitioning it into abstraction layers. The model is a product of the Open Systems Interconnection project at theInternational Organization for Standardization (ISO). The model groups similar communication functions into one of seven logical layers. A layer serves the layer above it and is served by the layer below it. For example, a layer that provides error-free communications across a network provides the path needed by applications above it, while it calls the next lower layer to send and receive packets that make up the contents of that path. Two instances at one layer are connected by a horizontal connection on that layer.…

The physical layer is the actual medium in which the data travels. This is usually a wire, hub, or over the air. The physical layer can be secured by protecting access to network cables and ports. Data transmitted over fiber optics is much harder to intercept than data being transmitted over copper wire.…
