Bridges are networking devices that can connect 2 local area networks (LAN). A bridge can learn all of the MAC addresses on the network, and this is done during the bridges data gathering phase. Basically a bridge will receive the data and analyze the address. The bridge will then pass the data on to the correct address. The ports on a bridge are in and out, but they are smart ports with the ability to locate the address on the network. Switches are much like a bridge where they can connect networks that use the same protocols. They are used to direct traffic over multiple networks. Some switches will check the data packets for errors before sending them to their final destination. This is for a low to medium traffic network. A higher traffic network may want to use a cross point switch which will just forward the data packets to their final destination. Bridges and switches are alike in that they can connect a network or networks together. They both are like traffic cops that can help send the data packets to the final destination. The main difference is the number of networks that they can connect. A bridge and connect 2 networks and a switch can connect multiple networks. $69.99

The Hewlett Packard switch is a midsize entry level switch that supports desktop environments. The HP 1405-16 switch is quiet and reliable that comes with a 3 year warranty. A large plus for this switch is that it has auto detection for port speeds and also auto detects the type of cabling. Hewlett Packard is a well know name in the computer field and they build solid equipment. * 120.99 The D-Link DES-1026g is a 26 port plug and play switch. It provides 24 10/100 baseTX and 2 10/100/1000 baseTX ports. Where 10 would be mega bits per second, base stands for baseband and Tx is a minimum of

Northbridge is known as the memory controller hub which typically handles the communications between the CPU, RAM, AGP or PCIe and Southbridge. Southbridge is responsible for the hard drive controller, IO controller, and any other integrated hardware. This could be things like sound, USB, PCI, IDE, BIOS, and Ethernet. Heat sinks are a dead give-away for the two Bridges. The Northbridge will typically be closer to the CPU and have a larger heat sink.…

This is beneficial for the network and the switch since the switch has memory and can handle additional than one piece of data packet. The data packet packets are read by the switch and sends the data packet only to the MAC address that the data packet is filled out for that MAC. That saves the bandwidth by not using all the wire sending un-needed data packet across.…

Ethernet switch is a store-and-forward device that operates at layer2. It forwards the packets to the destination based on the MAC address, thus no collision occurs. On the other hand, Ethernet hub operate at layer 1 of the OSI, it sends the packet to all connected ports(i.e. if flood the network) regardless of the destination thus producing collisions. A switch is more suitable for a network with a high traffic load because there are no collisions on the switch…

Cisco’s major products are switches and routers. A switch is used to connect workstations within a local-area network (LAN). The switch directs data only to the destination for which it is intended, and increases the efficiency of networks by reducing traffic and the number of “collisions” of data headed in opposite directions. Routers are the devices that connect networks to other networks in a wide-area network (WAN). Switches and routers are classified along a layer 1 to layer 7 continuums in technical point of view. Cisco competes on layer 2 onwards in the switches and routers market. With the explosion of the Internet in 1990s, Cisco achieved great success in the high tech industry, from basic connectivity to high-end, multilayer intelligent service switching solutions.…
