Michele behaves compassionately towards his sister Maria. He constantly protects her despite his displeasure of her following him ‘as stubbornly as a little mongrel rescued from a dog pound’. Michele worries and ‘couldn’t leave her’ alone in case of a threat, especially from Melichetti ‘a man liable to shoot you’. Michele attempts to fulfill his duty of Maria’s personal warrior. He tries to protect her from the harsh reality of the world. Michele goes inside his tent so that they ‘wouldn’t hear the screams in the kitchen’, to tell Maria a story, distracting her from conflict that is occurring within their household. Through a child’s perspective Michele endures some “extreme’ measures, like losing the race to help his sister with her injured foot. Sacrificing the race demonstrates a high level maturity because he is devoted to his sister and will do anything to make sure she is safe.…

Finding out that she is pregnant adds to her misery, which she deals with by taking pills. She desperately tries to get in touch with her ex-lover, but fails to do so. To make matters worse her friend Candela finds herself in an unpleasant situation and seeks help from Pepa. Through a series of unlikely events Pepa finds herself face to face with Carlos and his fiancee, the son of Ivan and his ex-wife Lucia. It is quite surprising to see that Pepa takes an immediate liking towards Carlos, and treats him like her own son. The entrance of a crazy ex-wife named Lucia, further strengthens the plot, making it more complex. She is haunted by memories of Ivan leaving her for Pepa, which drives her to gain vengeance on him by killing him. There begins a wild goose chase, where Lucia chases after Ivan and Pepa chases Lucia to stop her from killing Ivan. In this way, Almodovar weaves a story that confuses but also amuses the audience.…

María was the one who appears brave and stable and Blanca, who seems to follow María in whatever she does. All three had their reason for this journey, their family, and their battles along the way. This movie shows the struggle for individuals who have very little options and even fewer resources. The drug lords preyed on individuals like this, who they knew would risk their lives for, what is seen to them, as minimal investment. The decisions that are made by these girls are not only dangerous they can be deadly. In the end, María appeared to have gotten her happy ending, however the journey to get there was inevitably not worth the risk. This story transformation evolves as different events transpire. The moral journey seems to be the most notable. The choices made along the way. The happily ever after ending is not one that most would imagine, but for a girl from Columbia, it was portrayed as the best outcome for her and her…

Matilde appears in the movie as a strong female character that is pursuing higher education as a student in Juan’s class. Here she represents a female figure that is independent and hardworking, but she is shut down by Juan while she is solving a complex equation and is unable to do anything. Later on we see her confront Juan for embarrassing her, and again she is depicted as a strong female figure that refuses to be submissive to Juan. Interestingly enough, she transforms into the caretaker figure that was expected of women under the regime. Kinder points out, “[Matilde Lucia] soon becomes more concerned with Juan’s fate than with her own academic future; no wonder [Juan envisions her a happy future] within the domestic realm of the family rather than within the public realm of science or industry” (Kinder 80). In this example Matilde’s role as a woman in society takes precedence over her own future. The strongest female character in the film is ultimately brought back to assume her position as a motherly caretaker who will sacrifice herself to help Juan, who in this case represents the oppressive Francoist regime who utilizes the women’s sacrifice to help achieve his own…

Micaela (M) is a respectable and adequate woman who is loyal to her fiancé but is always leading him and influencing his behavior in life. The first movement we see from M is at a low height with collapsing, repeated contractions which give us an initial idea of her silent presence amongst her fiancé Don Jose while he is conversing with the other solider portraying the idea of her intimidation of other men. Her movements are curved in shape though still very forceful, sharp and have a punch like force about them which gives the idea she is conscience of Jose, giving his directions and guidelines of how the behave. She then progresses into a lot of sustaining movements, which she continuously motions upward, giving the impression and the resemblance of appreciation of life and her faithfulness toward Don Jose. Symbolism of a wish to have a child occurs at 0.33 through the use of curved “cradle-like” motions which shows the couples desire to settle down and be a family. There is also a repetitive floor pattern as M often travels away from Don Jose but then travels directly back towards his representing her dedication and loyalty as she always returns to her fiancé and also the idea of her constant presence. M’s dynamics then take a sudden change as she is not longer performing contracted, closed movements in a repetitive nature which portrayed her ideal feministic nature of being loyal and she now has a less controlled nature about her performing asymmetrical kicks and contrasting shapes as she seems to let loose the further she ventures away from Jose which symbolizes her soul connection to him as she always returns back. The duet performed by M and Don Jose see’s M return to her original circular, curved shape movements and we see…
