Question: Write on the theme of ‘forgiveness’ that you find in the novel, ‘The Curse’.

Lee Su Ann, the writer of the novel ‘The Curse’ had brought up many themes in her writing. One of the themes that I liked very much in this novel is ‘forgiveness’ which was clearly portrayed in Azreen’s character. As we know from the beginning, Azreen is a very outspoken, aggressive and stubborn character but towards the ending of the story she had learnt to forgive others. Azreen was very much influenced by the Old Lady who begged Azreen to learn to forgive others at the time of her death. We can see very much that Azreen kept her promise when she forgave Mohd Asraf who had deliberately played with her emotions. All the while Azreen thought Asraf liked her but, Asraf was actually falling for Madhuri and when he admitted that to Azreen, she was speechless at first. Azreen hid herself from Asraf by running away until she reached the cliff of the hills when Asraf confessed his love towards Madhuri. But as time passed, her anger melted away slowly and she forgave Asraf as the Old Lady had told to her just before she died. Azreen too learnt to forgive her father who murdered Madhuri. Even though she felt sad at first but she did not feel angry or resentment at him but she realized that she had lost her only father that she used to know as a very hot-tempered man. Slowly Azreen forgave her father but she could not see him eye to eye so she left him alone and that was the time when Encik Saleh had a heart attack and collapsed. But if at all Azreen had not promised the Old Lady to forgive others, I do not think that she would forgive her father for murdering Madhuri. Azreen too forgave Madhuri for all the hurt and resentment she caused in Azreen’s life. Azreen was jealous of Madhuri’s beauty and genteel behavior. She was the favorite daughter. She also resented Madhuri as Madhuri was able to captivate Asraf who eventually fell in love with her. But, when Azreen

Reinhold Niebuhr once said “Forgiveness is the final form of love.” When someone wrongs a person how would they feel? In the novel A Parchment of Leaves by Silas House a Cherokee girl named Vine marries an Irish man named Saul. Saul’s brother Aaron who vine saved when he was bitten by a snake ends up liking Vine which turns into an obsession. Throughout the book Aaron becomes increasingly obsessed with Vine to the point that he asks her to run away with him and while drunk rapes her. This leads to her killing Aaron. Vine has to fight to redeem herself and also forgive herself for what she has done. Forgiving someone is one thing but letting them redeem themselves is another. Redemption allows the person to do something to earn forgiveness to themselves and others which is what many of the characters in the novel do.…

19). This brings readers to another topic that breeds sympathy for Amir. The young Pashtun boy grew up in a big confusing world without the help of his biological mother. Amir grew up not having a mother and knowing little about her. In the evolutionary perspective, every child needs their mother to help them in emotional and physical development. Considering the fact that Amir grew up neglected by his father, Amir never received this crucial experience. Lastly, another factor that contributed to why readers would feel bad for Amir is because of the way the author portrayed the setting. Amir was a very emotional boy and was looked down upon by his father when he would cry. This forced him to go to a private place and shed his tears so he wouldn’t be seen. Amir never had a mother to be there for him. Readers sympathize with Amir because they can understand what an emotional toll being motherless must have taken on Amir, not only as a young boy, which continues to affect him as an…

Dr. Lickerman explains that,”To label anyone, even the most despicable of figures, as purely evil is to delude ourselves”(Redemption). Labeling Amir as a bad person suggest that he never did anything to change or continued to act as the same misguided boy from his past. Even with his weaknesses he turns his life around and transcends to do the right thing instead of behaving egocentrically. He puts massive efforts in helping Sohrab recover emotionally and physically. His recovery suits as his last step in finding peace with himself and accepting that he has no power in changing the past. Amir becomes a parental figure for him which helps him deal with his emotions until Amir breaks his promise. When Amir breaks his promise, he reminisces his past betrayal and must take another step to make things right with Sohrab. After the incident Amir saves Sohrab from the danger of Afghanistan and takes him back to America. Amir then expresses that he has, “brought Hassan's son from Afghanistan to America, lifting him from the certainty of turmoil" (Hosseini 356). His feelings change from guiltiness and self condemnation to clarity and peace when he stands up for Sohrab. He becomes his protector from society and himself. When General Taheri asks why he made such an effort for a Hazara, Amir responds, “He’s my nephew. That's what you tell people when they ask... You will never refer to him as ‘Hazara boy’...he has a name” (Hosseini 361). Standing up for Sohrab shows Amir’s development throughout the story, proving his goodness and redemption. According to Diane Barth’s study on redemption, “Development and growth only occur when we are able to recognize and attempt to rectify our transgressions”(How Much Guilt is Enough). Amir works his way slowly to change his actions becoming someone honest, caring, and…

No one just decides they want forgiveness from someone, they do something they wish they could take back then realize what they have done is wrong. Amir for example has a long list of things he dose wrong. Not only dose he do wrong, he dose these things to his best friend, Hassan. While Amir knows he much smarted that Hassan he uses that as an advantage by teasing him about the meaning of words when he is reading to him. Small things like that happen everyday but some actions are so terrible they will haunt you for the rest of your life. Amir’s experience with this happening to him is when he witnessed Hassan being raped and did absolutely nothing to help him or tell anyone about the incident. “I had one last chance to make a final decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be… In the end I ran” (Hosseini 77) Here Amir tells him self that he can do what is right and save Hasssan but instead chooses to run, a decision that he will regret for almost the rest of his life. Amir isn’t the type of person that can just let something like this go, he thinks about it every minute of everyday and he cant just tell someone or talk to Hassan about it. He has his own way of dealing with his problem.…

The source is about forgiveness, love and not holding a grudge. The main arguments of the source is why has this person chose this particular road to travel and what will his life become if he does not change the course. The author’s purpose is to remind us all that we have not always done the right things in life, but change is possible within us; we just have to let it come out. The goal of this source is to inform people about forgiveness and not holding grudges towards people. This source is not reliable because it does not have an author. I will not include this in my rhetorical analysis essay because it does not seem factual…

The third difference between Azreen and Asraf is that Azreen is wise while Asraf, is quite the opposite. Azreen depicts her overseas education very well, highlighting her wisdom. We can see throughout the story, that Azreen, even as a child, does not believe in the rumours that spread around the village. She doesn’t give a second glance to the baseless gossips towards the Old Lady and instead befriends the Old Lady and become good companion to each other. Her wisdom is a trait she possessed since a very young age and it stayed intact as she grew up. She also did not trust the words of the rumour-mongering Pn. Normala, when she claims the village to be cursed, because appearently, Madhuri shed white blood when she died. In my opinion, Azreen is smart and wise in the sense that she does not buy unverified and ridiculous gossip.…

I like Azreen because she is outspoken and she is not afraid to spoke her mind. She is vocal and says her opinions although sometimes she says the wrong things at the wrong time. She also hates her father's treatment of her foster parents and Madhuri's burial ceremony that is conducted without her presence. In handling the village gossip, Pn Normala, Azreen tells her off that the rain has started even before the Old Lady comes into town.…
