Nouit Blanche Art Festival Analysis
Festivals are good social gatherings that bring people closer together. One festival I enjoy in particular is the Nouit Blanche art festival in Toronto. This assignment asks me to analyze an event that has taken place recently and record my observations. Some evident observations can be interpreted by the viewers expressions and non verbal cues. This assignment also asks me to relate the festival to concepts of culture. This festival relates to the concept of mass culture because this is an event that everyone of all ages and races seem to enjoy. Another thing this assignment asks is to acknowledge any limitations I may have had during the festival. I was still able to observe the setting, people, activities, conversations, and relationships. In the rest of this assignment I will explain the factors that make this event enjoyable to everyone. The Nouit Blanche art festival can be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates contemporary art.

When I first arrived to the festival, i was unsure if i would enjoy the event or not, because I am not a fan of art in any way. Me and my friends parked outside of the event so we spent about 10 minutes walking there. It was about 11 pm and the streets were pretty crowded with people. We continued walking towards the event and we saw the first sculpture. It was a big, bright elephant with a rainbow of colours on it. There was a large amount of people smiling and taking pictures. My identity was overt because there were no secret observations taking place. It seemed that most groups of people were all very friendly with each other. There were a lot of couples walking around Toronto as well. In my situation, my friend that goes to school in Toronto was navigating for most of the time because he knew the city better than the rest of us. In situations I observed, there was usually someone suggesting an area to go to next, rather than it being a collective group decision. The observations that have taken place mean that people generally enjoyed the festival. The fact that people of all ages were at the festival suggests that this is a festival available to all walks of life. People taking pictures means that they want to capture the moment and they enjoy what they are seeing.     It was my first time visiting the Nuit Blanche Festival in Toronto and it definitely was an experience to say the least. Since the streets were flooded with people, I found it difficult to really take in all the art that surround this area.     The “Storm King Art Center” is an open air museum. The 500 acred park is filled with fields, hills landscapes, and sculptures, making it not only a park, but a museum. Just by looking at pictures and videos of the place I feel enhanced by the beauty of it.     This type of environment suggest a freedom from constraint where party goers can dance and have fun. The clothing worn is fancy thus a formal event is happening, perhaps a ball or a concert. The red tint gives the picture a painterly element showing the viewer that the artist didn’t just take a picture but that he hybridized painting and photo making. The red tint is a very emotionally intense color, giving the picture a feeling of high energy. The circles are painted in two different shades of the same color thus allowing the viewer the look into the circle and see some sort of detail, suggesting the faces are all connected but have distinct differences. By covering the faces of the crowd, this distances the viewer from crucial information such as the expressions and the age of the party goers, allowing the viewer to create their own ideas of what is happening in the photomontage. The only face that is fully seen is the accordionist. This comparison shows that maybe the only person who matters is the accordionist. The message of this piece is from the accordionist point of view, telling the story that everyone sees and knows him but he doesn’t know the crowd.     A cultural event that I have attended in the past that has had a memorable affect on my life was a Native American Powwow. This event takes place every year, Thanksgiving weekend in Tucson, AZ. I arrived in the late afternoon, as the sun was going down. I remember seeing many different types of people, from tourists to the different Native American performers. The physical setting of this particular celebration was outside, and based around, one main circle. Drums were beating so loud, you could feel the pound inside your chest. Different activities were going on all around, such as dancers, vendors, and a huge variety of foods to choose from. The circular dancing arena is known as the arbor, this area is blessed before any of the events begin (Schultz, 2001). This area is considered to be sacred ground, and is respected throughout the entire celebration (Schultz, 2001). The arbor was made of tree limbs and leaves. The four main entries into the festivities were used to resemble the four points of a compass (Schultz, 2001). The dancers entered from the east entrance, and the main announcer was located by the West entrance. Many spectators were sitting on blankets, and some on lawn chairs. The environment was relaxed, and a very friendly atmosphere. The activities included dance and drum contests, different ceremonies, and many different vendors. The crafts were all handmade and amazing. Each piece looked as if it were specially made from the heart. The Native American culture to me felt festive, warm, and very inviting. The dancer’s come from many different tribes. Their faces were painted, and their costumes consisted of beautiful festive colors.
