Industrial Analysis
TRENDS
Biscuits in the Philippines continues to compete with chocolate confectionery. Many consumers continue to consume biscuits, usually chocolate-coated biscuits, as a cheaper alternative to chocolate confectionery. Brands such as Choco Knots, Knick Knacks and Cubee tend to steal shares from brands such as Kit Kat and Gandour. Consumers tend to perceive biscuits as a cheaper snack alternative and better value for money compared to chocolate confectionery in the Philippines.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
The Monde Nissin Corp is the leading biscuits brand manufacturer and is set to post a 34% value share in 2012, thanks to its wide product portfolio, popularity of its brands and continuous large investment on marketing and product innovation. The company had numerous multimedia advertisements in 2012 with about seven different television commercials promoting its various brands. Monde Nissin is one of the oldest manufacturers of biscuits and is proven to be a producer of quality biscuit products. Its Sky Flakes brand is the main driver of its growth and the major contributor of its value sales.
PROSPECTS
Competition between chocolate confectionery and biscuits is likely to intensify because both industries tend to target a similar market niche and use similar strategies to gain market share. Over the forecast period, both industries will be driven by innovation to keep consumers interested. Manufacturers are also likely to restrict unit price growth to stay competitive.
The packaged food sector in the Philippines is expected to rebound after the global economic recession, as consumers continue to move into urban areas and the number of hypermarkets/supermarkets expands. Consumers are expected to trade down brands, seeking lower priced packaged foods, but without sacrificing health concerns and convenience.

    Food Retail in Thailand

Rapid growth of the Thai economy in the 1990s led to dramatic changes in food retailing. The traditional food-distribution system—hundreds of thousands of fresh markets that sell fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish, along with small mom-and-pop food stores that distribute dry goods—is giving way to modern supermarkets, hypermarkets, and convenience stores, all being developed at an incredible pace. This paper examines the changing Thai food-retailing sector and reports the findings of a consumermarket-basket price comparison by type of retail outlet in various regions of the country. Thailand’s Food-Retailing Sector The retail food market in Thailand can be divided into four major sub-sectors: supermarkets, hypermarkets, convenience store chains, and traditional or fresh markets. Despite the rapid growth of non-traditional retail formats during the 1996–2000 period, as Table 1 shows (this growth occurred during a time of economic downturn and upheaval), traditional markets still accounted for over 80% of food retail trade in 2000. For this reason, retail chains are optimistic about the prospects for future growth by attracting more people into store formats other than the traditional markets. It is estimated that hypermarkets and convenience store numbers will grow by 400 percent during the 2000-2010 period, while supermarkets will increase by 200 percent (Jitpleecheep 2000). Supermarkets In Thailand, supermarkets for the most part have developed in department stores (multi-level shopping…

The most common commercial flour used in the Philippines is the all-purpose flour made from wheat or rice. Statistics show that we are importing significant amount of flour since we do not produce wheat that can be used to meet the aggregate demand for flour. Because of this, the price of flour increases. And due to high domestic demand for flour and high price of flour, other flour alternatives such as malunggay flour and squash flour were introduced in the market. But because of the small local supply of malunggay and squash, these flour substitutes are not widely commercialized in the country.…

Jollibee was able to respond to the threat and developed a new product, the Champ, which was in direct competition with McDonald’s Big Mac. Since market research had showed that Filipinos still preferred the taste of Jollibee’s hamburgers, they focused the Champ’s advertisement and promotions on its taste and size, to diversify it from the Big Mac. This strategy worked well also due to the subsequent political events that brought by a wave of national pride. The political and economic crisis that took place in the mid 1980s led foreign investors, including McDonald’s, to shrink their market in the Philippines and not to seek out new investment opportunities until the political situation stabilized. Jollibee experienced a surge in demand and began branching out – it reached 28 stores in 1985 [Exhibit 1 – case study] – developing and broadening…
