Nonprofit Transparency by Rebecca Alene Goza

Abstract
This paper will discuss the emerging management trends developing as a result of the increasing incidents of financial misappropriation and the associated reputation destruction resulting from recent scandals in nonprofit entities. Discussion will include the many possible considerations associated with increased fraud incidents in charitable nonprofits, including inconsistent statutory requirements based on the state of incorporation as well as outdated federal oversight requirements over 501(c)(3) organizations. The paper will research three key management theories and will draw a conclusion regarding the next evolution of management theory in nonprofit entities. This paper will summarize how one of the largest charities is handling this evolving area and will present a theory that one of the biggest areas of focus and awareness should be the expectation that nonprofits demonstrate to stakeholders, explicitly and measurably, that they are being effective and transparent in fulfilling their missions.

    The United Way of America, based in Alexandria, Virginia, is a non-profit organization that works with more than 1,200 local United Way offices throughout the country in a coalition of charitable organizations to pool efforts in fundraising and support. The focus of United Way is identifying and resolving pressing community issues, as well as making measurable changes in the communities through partnerships with schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, community development corporations, voluntary and neighborhood associations, the faith community, and others. A charity organization needs internal control to ensure that all the resources are properly utilized to achieve organization goals and varies projects. In order to reduce financial risk such as theft, internal control plays an important role. According to the case, the business process of nonprofit organizations is usually not well regulated. There is always room for errors in my opinion; a nonprofit organization can implement the following controls to ensure transparency and accountability in its operations. The staffs that take money out of the United Way of America have served in a position for both authorization and recording. In general, what they did was to write checks to themselves and then adjust the financial records. Segregation of duties is the economic and efficient way to against those types of fraud. No single individual should be allowed to both authorize and record. All transactions, especially financial transactions, have to be recorded properly with all the supplemental documents. Nonprofit organizations should not only record any changes to their business process but also document the reason behind those changes. Policy enforcement is needed for this not to happen…

    Marketing gets no respect in the nonprofit world. Program people tend to hold the most senior positions in nonprofits and accordingly have the most status. Fundraisers are often viewed as necessary evils, as are operations staff, including those who labor in the communications and marketing departments. Several factors account for the suspicion or disdain with which many nonprofit managers view the marketing function. Mostly, it’s a matter of ignorance. Usually trained in other disciplines, nonprofit leaders often fail to understand what marketing can and can’t do for their organizations. Consequently, they hold some strange assumptions (e.g. “Our good work will sell itself ”), unrealistic expectations (e.g., demanding to be in The New York Times once a week) and arbitrary funding theories (i.e., when fundraising is down, cut the communications budget). Compounding the challenge, few nonprofit managers recognize their lack of expertise in these areas.
