Nieswiadomy (2012) explains that nonprobability sampling is most often the preferred method of nursing research and although it is known to limit generalizations about the research findings to the overall public as criteria is met to be selected. Specifically the purposive sampling method of the nonprobability for the participants were picked in the preoperative ward to check the effects of IPA in controlling PONV. As the research study aimed to evaluate the effects of IPA verses the use of promethazine, the sample was obtained under the circumstances that would best evaluate the validity of the results. This in part was due to the high risk patients that were selected with the length of general anesthesia, gender, and also being nonsmoking.
