Apple Inc. is currently the world’s most valuable company at over $500 billion as a result of a “user-centric fast follower” business and marketing strategy . Apple has not pioneered completely new-to-the-world products but excels as an innovator of key technologies in growth markets . Apple’s success stems from its Leapfrog Strategy of improving/enhancing its own products based on the mistakes of market pioneers (Walker & Mullins, 2011). With the 2007 release, the iPhone’s sleeker design and innovative software improved some overall functionality of the product compared to existing smart phones in the market. The iPhone did not incorporate 3G technology and the camera offered only 2-megapixals when other companies offered up to 5-megapixals. Nevertheless, improvements over existing technologies resulted in Apple obtaining a share of the mobile phone market over established competitors like Nokia and Motorola.…

Nokia faces intense competition in the market. Besides the mobile phone companies – LG Electronics, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson; competitors also include electronics suppliers such as Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Palm, Research In Motion (RIM) and Sony. The smartphone industry is one of the most dynamic industries and has been witnessing unprecedented competition and changes over the past few years. Given the fact that the lion’s portion of the market is in the hands of a very few large corporate companies (The Economist Online, 12 September 2012), it would be worthwhile analysing the competitive processes within this industry. The emergence of a few small but potential players, mainly the companies operating in developing countries, make the case more compelling for an in depth analysis. (Financial Times, 28 November 2012), (BBC, 15 May 2012.) We will start off with a look…

On January 10, 2007, Apple unveiled the iPhone, a new smartphone that combines a music player, camera, web browser, e-mail and phone in a single device. The iPhone is unique not because it offers anything fundamentally new, but because it brings together almost all of the currently separate portable consumer gadgets into a single well designed package driven by a powerful and intuitive interface. The big question, and the topic of an article I recently read in the Wall Street Journal, is whether the iPhone will have trouble attracting customers due to the high price tag. Granted, Apple has a large and loyal fan base that can be counted on to rush out and buy almost anything the company produces. That said, Apple has produced a few lemons (e.g. Macintosh Cube, Newton) that even its own fanatics won't buy.…

Threat of Substitute Products or Services: Few significant substitutes existed for PCs until the “digital convergence” of PC and CE products (ie: smartphones, music machines). To combat this threat, Apple took advantage of the shift and produced and profited off their own “substitutes”. Therefore, it was ultimately a favorable dynamic for Apple, who saw a drastic increase in their market value during the iPhone and iPod phenomenon of 2007 onward (Exhibit1a and Exhibit2).…

I vividly remember the first time a mobile phone, the legendary Nokia 8110, had been welcomed in our family through my father. Although it was Motorola Incorporation that launched the first mobile in 1973 into the market by Martin Cooper, who was working as an engineer for the company at that time, Nokia had managed to astonish people in my country, Turkey, by the 8110. It had all the attention, for a specific period of time, in Turkey. This product, the 8110, was launched in 1996, and is one of the most significant things that remains in my mind since my childhood. Over time, since the first mobile invented by Martin Cooper, there have been a thousandfold evolving new technologies created by companies pertaining to the phone industry. 60 percent of the world has mobile phones today. With this percentage, beyond dispute, the celluler phone sector addresseses an immense market reality all over the world. Therefore, I've found the mobile phone and handset manufacturering industry worth researching. Among these companies, Nokia ( Finland ), seems to be the market leader, is ahead of its American competitor Motorola by far. In addition to those two, there are Samsung ( S. Korea ), LG ( S. Korea ), Siemens ( Germany ), and Sony Ericsson ( Japan/Sweden ) as their hard rivals to share the market.…
