No Scrubs By Johnny Cash: Song Analysis
My group for the music time capsule was Ashley Armitage, Dylan Bates, and Jordan Crutchfield. These 10 songs were chosen because we felt that they will be relevant in the near and distant future. Honestly, the way my group chose our songs was by each of us picking three songs from our individual lists and mutually discussing the tenth song. The first song is Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. Ashley Armitage chose this song, and with very good reason. Ring of Fire was released in April of 1963 and has lasted through the years. It was originally recorded by Anita Carter. There is some speculation about the original writer of the song, June Carter or Johnny Cash. Although the years go by, this song is still widely known and continues to be used in many different form in today’s society.

This song is performed by strong female artists who, as stated in the song, “don’t want no scrub.” These ladies are not just singing a song, they are portraying their independence and stating that they will not settle for just any guy who gives them attention. This song has reached the top of the charts in the late 90s and has continued to remain relevant. It is still used in commercials and movies, maintaining its popularity. This song will always be like an anthem for independent women who won’t settle for anything less than they deserve. The next song is Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman. This is one of my favorite songs, because the sound of it speaks to my soul. It reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1996 making it Chapman’s biggest US hit to date. Although it is a break up song, it is more of a plea for a reason to not give up on the relationship. The conclusion of the song though is the partner stating that love was already proclaimed and there is nothing left to say.
