High School Foreign Language Each year, high schools around the country waste money on unnecessary foreign language programs. Although learning a second language can help get a job, or help adapt to a new country that doesn’t speak English, if there was a choice, most students would not choose to take a foreign language class. Also, most students who take foreign classes just to acquire the credits to graduate and usually do not even end up using the language later in life. If students had the opportunity to take classes beneficial to their career of choice, they would. If a foreigner moves to America, they need to know how to speak American English. Lastly, some extremely people just can’t grasp a foreign language. It’s no doubt that for certain jobs, having even the little bit of knowledge one acquires from a high school language class can help, such as being tour guide for tourists, or a police officer, or even a wait person at a sit-down restaurant. The issue is, there are more jobs that do not need skills involving a secondary language. If someone is a fireman and they have to go save someone out of a burning building, that person who needs saving is not going to stand there and try to comprehend what the fireman is telling them to do. They are going to go to the fireman and get out of the building. Also, a school teacher does not need to take language classes to help a non-English speaking student because that student takes away from the teacher’s ability to focus on the other students, and therefore the others do not get as good of an education. If an English speaking American citizen moves, or even visits a foreign country that doesn’t speak English, it would really help them fit in and adapt to the culture there if they spoke even a little bit of the national language of that country. Even though that is true, it is the emigrant’s obligation to learn the language of the land. Most Americans do

Though English is not the official language of the United States it is the most commonly used Language in the United States. Granted some cities have an area known commonly as “China Town” where almost everyone speaks Chinese and in places like Texas many people speak Spanish. However, when a foreigner travels outside of those areas they are almost expected to be able to speak and understand English. Without the ability to use English outside of their respective area, a foreigner will in most cases not even be able to order food. Their best chance is to see pictures of food and be able to point at them. Next is the task of paying which is no small task if you do not speak English. The odds of being able to travel into another culture not able to communicate verbally and function as a member of society. Maybe David should have become more accustom to society in Paris and become more fluent in French before traveling to Paris. Without the ability to function as a normal citizen in France, he might as well go ahead and place himself into “America Town.” As a matter of fact, it is more common for people in other countries to speak English than it is for an American to speak another language. You are no more an American if you speak English than someone that does not; however, English is what is pushed in the United States. Even in school for ESL students; the schools are not just accommodating the students because they speak a different language. The schools are having the students learn to speak, read, write, and comprehend in English. I believe that this is a good thing because if a person has the ability to learn another language and become bilingual then that person will have an upper hand in the work place and society from someone who can only speak one language. Is that not what we are trying to prepare the students of the future to be outside of school? Educators want their students to be successful, intuitive, and able to use critical thinking skills to perform above and beyond the call of duty in and out of school. Being bilingual gives those students that extra…

First I begin with the belief that every student can learn if you use their Native language instead of English. As teachers we need to try and reach our students through a variety of ways and language is one way. But again the younger generation and I need to learn our language because we are stuck between not being fluent in English or Navajo. Integrating our language into our classrooms with English will help students become proficient English speakers. It is another way children could grasp the different content areas by relating it to our…

Many people seem to forget that the purpose of schooling is to “educate students so that they have choices when they graduate” (Bilingual Education Is Necessary). By allowing students the option to learn another language, they are broadening the students choices for their future occupations. Furthermore by adding language classes, the school will also benefit from the enriched staff resources. Teachers teaching other languages will “bring added knowledge and teaching and managing strategies” (Bilingual Education Is Necessary) which will help multicultural schools. Not only will these teachers assist the school, they will be able to connect with certain students more than other teachers. Along with the assistance, these bilingual teachers will bring an understanding and acceptance of other cultures. By both learning another language and appreciating its unique culture, the global economy has the possibility to prosper due to the knowledge of language and culture being “a pillar of economic achievement” (Bilingual Education Should Be Increasing but It Is Declining). With the global economy prospering from a labor force that does business in many different languages, being bilingual should be sought after…

There are many ongoing debates on whether or not our children should learn more than one language. I feel that it is imperative in today’s society to know more than one language. Knowing more than one language opens up so many doors. It looks great on a resume to show that you are bilingual. Most people still have the misconception that Spanish is the language that is the only language that would be worth their time learning. Actually the 2nd most spoken language in the world is Chinese; Spanish is third followed by Japanese and then French. In order for our children to compete in the world market they must speak at least one of these languages in my opinion. Our population is changing and the world is becoming more diverse. We must expose our children to other languages and cultures so they realize that the world is much bigger than what is outside of our door and we must make an effort to communicate with everyone in it.…

Overall being bilingual is beneficial for people, for cognitive, learning purposes, social assets and career advantages. The one and only issue standing in the way is, schools in America aren’t making this a mandatory class. Making this a mandated class will give students in the northeastern Colorado area a preeminent advantage in their education and eventually their future jobs. Making a foreign language a requirement will make American students’ educations similar to those in other countries, whose students excel in globalized jobs. It will also help Americans working overseas or for a business dealing with clients globally. Ordinarily, learning a foreign language is a great exploration of knowledge, creativity, and growth. In our interconnected world today, only good can come of mandating a foreign language in American…
