No Crooked Leg, No Bleared Eye By Elizabeth I

I am my greatest piece of art and, similarly to poetry, I am relentlessly expressing myself. I remember the first time I created a piece of poetry that I actually enjoyed and felt proud of, as an artist. I never felt so in tune and so whole, perhaps when I am painting, when I delivered my poem out loud. It was senior year and I had the greatest literature professor who introduced me to the many poems mentioned in my essay that describe who I am. Poetry reflects who I am because it is a genre of strength, difficulty, a great variety of styles and themes and an even greater artistic expression.

I am an artist: I create art and I am currently majoring in Studio Art; but I am also an athlete: I do cayuco, CrossFit and Flag Football; or I care about the environment and the animals, by being vegan; but I also enjoy fashion and makeup, as means of personal expression. Poetry has many different styles and genres within. It is so assorted and full of endless possibilities from short poems such as “No Crooked Leg, No Bleared Eye” by Queen Elizabeth I, which is only four lines long to an eleven verse poem such as “Walshingham” by Sir Walter Raleigh or even a three verse piece about death such as “Written The Night Before His Execution” by Chidiock Tichbourne. There are infinite ways to create a poem with almost any topic or style. The diversity found in this genre is the most prominent characteristic that reflects who I am. Poetry is a genre that its sole purpose is to express anything and absolutely everything. By means of figures of speech, poetry meets its goal. A great example of an expressive poem is “The Flowers That on The Banks and Walks Did Grow” by Aemilia Lanyer where she uses a vocabulary flooded with personification to describe a beautiful garden and express the loss of someone. I personally really feel the line ‘The sun grew weak, his beams no comfort gave, while all the green things did make the earth their grave” resonates with me as an artist because it is so beautifully written in a way that decay is almost perfect. I really enjoy doing art that has an ethereal and aesthetically pleasing feel even when expressing strong emotions or themes. I use my hair, which I dye many different colors ranging from pink or blue to rainbow hued. Another way I like to express myself is through my makeup and my clothing which I really enjoy to put together and personally feel like I can reinvent myself every day and change depending on how I feel. But my most expressive medium is definitely my art but sadly is the rarest of them all.
