Gram negative bacteria resistant patterns are troublesome to the general public because common illnesses could suddenly become deadly. Carbapenem antibiotics are seen as a last resort. If gram-negative bacteria develop a resistance to this antibiotic, antibiotics could become useless in treating a super resistant strain of gram-negative bacteria. NMD-1 is one of the most resistant genes found in gram negative bacteria. If this genes is readily passed between different types of bacteria, widespread resistant bacteria could emerge. NMD-1 can spread between bacteria via conjugation (bacterial sex), the gene for NMD-1 is present on bacterial DNA (plasmids); these plasmids are outside the chromosome.
