Nixon Administration Evaluation
Between 1968 to 1974 President Richard M Nixon served as the president of the United States of America. During the Nixon administration the nation faced many challenges domestically and internationally. Nixon’s administration was challenged by the Vietnam war, the fluctuating economy, and the Watergate Scandal. His administration was plagued with challenges, both domestically, where it failed to gain support from the nation due to the war and economy, and internationally were his administration had more success. Ho Chi Minh responded by saying “the violation of our fundamental national rights still continues in South Vietnam” saying “Our Vietnamese people are deeply devoted to peace, a real peace with independence and real freedom, determined to fight to the end.” Ho Chi Minh sounds familiar to that of revolutionary America because when writing this letter he in fact used text from the Declaration of independance. Minh called out Nixon writing “You have expressed the desire to act for a just peace the U.S must cease war of aggression and withdraw troops. Respect the people to dispose of themselves without foreign influence” Minh wants his nation to be independent and safe without foreign intruders like the colonies with Britain. The Watergate scandal was a result of a June 1972 break-in to the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington D.C. in which the Nixon Administration tried to cover up its involvement. This scandal resulted in the indictment, trial, conviction of 43 U.S. officials many of whom served Nixon at the top of his administration. The F.B.I. used bank records to track down the money paid to the burglars from a fund used to re-elect president Nixon. Testimony by former Nixon officials revealed the that Nixon had recordings of his conversations with staff that showed he had tried to cover up the watergate scandal after the break-in. After this was discovered a court order was issued demanding Nixon turn over the tapes. There was an 18 minute clip missing from those tapes and Nixon denied knowing of what the topic of conversation could have been in those tapes. In the political cartoon by Herbert Block Nixon is how dropping tapes but not all of them and there is a dog labeled “pursuit of Nixon scandals” which has already been thrown bones labeled with the names of numerous people in Nixon’s administration.
