CASE STUDY: A multi-national company/TNC - NIKE

Nike trainers are sold and worn throughout the world. Nike is a typical transnational corporation (TNC). Its headquarters are in the USA, where all the major decisions and research take place, yet its sports shoes are manufactured in many countries around the world.

Like many TNCs, Nike subcontracts or uses independently owned factories in different countries to produce its trainers. Often this takes place in less economically developed countries (LEDCs) where labour costs are low. Nike says they are in the business of "marketing" shoes, not making them. However, Nike dictates the terms to the contractor: the design, the materials, the price it will pay.
Nike’s main activities are in South-East Asia, and up until recently it manufactured many of its trainers in South Korea. In the late 1980s labour costs in South Korea rose, so Nike decided to move production to Indonesia where costs were lower. China boasts the largest number of Nike contract factories - 124 in total.

Many of the workers in the Indonesian factories come from the surrounding countryside where they live in poverty. The conditions they move to are better, but not much. Some of the problems they face are:

Low wages and long hours
Industrial accidents
No workers’ rights – trade unions are illegal in Indonesia

Where workers do complain or protest they can lose their jobs. The contractors say they cannot afford to pay the workers more and Nike says that it is difficult to control what is happening in individual factories. This means that in a nation where unemployment is high and employees can be easily replaced, workers will continue to be open to exploitation.
Human rights and aid groups have for years criticized Nike for not doing enough to tackle poor working conditions in its supply chain, particularly in developing countries.

    Transnational corporations are companies that work in more than one countries. TNCs can be split into 3 main parts headquarters, research and development and manufacturing. Headquarters and R&D is usually located in the country of origin due where the brand originated from, staff and shareholders being located in this country, the security of the government and complexity of moving. Nikes suppliers have rapidly changed since 1989. South Korea has rapidly declined as a supplier from 60% to less than 10%.     The athletic apparel industry in which Nike is involved is a major money maker in the United States, but the fact that none of the factories are located in North America has brought some heat to the company. Nike controls more than 40 percent of the U.S. Market for sports related goods, but doesn’t have a single sneaker factory in this country (Miller 1). Nike continues to make millions of dollars yet exploits workers overseas by paying them very little, while requiring long hours without overtime pay in factories that are not up to “American” standard. The exploitation of workers in Third World counties, where the majority of Nike’s labor is done sparks a controversial issue. People question why is it that Nike continues these practices. According to “Just do it, Nike,” Nike seems especially fond of doing business in undemocratic countries like China and Indonesia, where the military can be relied upon to “crack heads” if workers get out of line (Miller 2). The military monitoring has been a large controversy due to the fact that these are often Chinese working against other Chinese workers, or Vietnamese against their own people also. For Nike there are two benefits: it it’s a cheap way to monitor in an overseas factory and it creates a sheaper labor workforce. In turn making the labor cheaper for Nike. This makes it possible for Nike workers from the states to work on other things and only tour the factories when nessecary. While still assuming a stable workforce without good pay. The critics of Nikes labor practices have taken tours and witnessed the mistreatment firsthand.     The company strategy that Nike uses is an ingenious one. A strategy that founder Phil Knight thought of while still in school at Stanford. Instead of paying Americans to put together Nike’s shoes, Knight thought that it would be a better idea to take manufacturing plants overseas to places where labor is much cheaper than in the U.S., places like Taiwan and South Korea. With 86% of its products being produced in one of those two countries and Nike employing a large number of people who lived there, the countries were becoming more wealthy until Knight decided prices were too high to manufacture there anymore (Hitting the Wall, 3). This seemed to work and production was going well until the early 1990s when labor strikes rose to 112 in 1991 and news began to leak out about the terrible conditions Nike’s labor force was working in. The subcontractor companies that Nike hired overseas were using underage workers and brutally underpaying them. The pay was so low that a family couldn’t even survive off of the wages made at a Nike factory even while working six days a week. Nike’s sales than began to decline and the company was once again dealing with the negative brand issues that came about numerous times in the 90s for their bad labor practices.…
