Night Mother Characters
Jessie

Jessie is somewhere in her mid-thirties or early forties. She suffers from epilepsy, and this, combined with her perceived failure in relationships, provokes her decision to commit suicide.

Jessie has not felt in charge of her life, but she decided to takes charge of her death. Hence, her act proves that even though suicide seems a weak behavior, on the other side it can be an uprising for her misery. From the beginnig of the act it seems like Jessie has lack of love. Because Jessie suffers from epilepsy; her father is dead; her loveless marriage ended in divorce, her absent son is petty thief; her last job did not work out and, in general, her life is stale and unprofitable. Moreover, while she was living with her mother there are some communication and family bonds problems. Because of the atmosphere in the house and her tough life she is suffering an obvious love and hope gap.
So would hope and love make a difference to Jessie? The most interesting question the story raises is; would Jessie's life have been different if it would have been filled with conversations like the one that occurred that critical night? It is not like her mother never talks to Jessie. It is just she never says anything important or really meaningful. So, Jessie preferred the silence. Maybe because of her silence she gives an calm and peaceful impression for the audiences. Especially in that night she seems very calm and patient.
At first her mother refuses to take her seriously when she told her that she was going to commit , but as Jessie sets about tidying the house and making lists of things to be looked after with a calm attitude.

Notes:
-from the text it is obvious that she make her decision and determined to make it real. It proves her determined character.
-“I think I can kill myself, Mama.”. While she was telling these lines, it is understandble that she is cold-heart and calm about her act of commiting suicide.
-“It’s dark and quiet.”. Again, these

In addition to this, the fact that her surname is drawn upon it suggests that the poem make reflect the permanence, a lot like Jessie herself it will not be changed for the sake of a man. The fact that Jessie chooses not to give in to a man wanting to marry her would have surprised a lot of Victorian readers who did not believe that women should be free to do as they pleased but should accept an offer of marriage when it was given, whether or not they loved the man. As a result of this it could be suggested that the Victorian attitude towards marriage contributed to the confusion of Jessie’s lover who finds her free-will hard to accept. She claims that she had already told him ‘long ago’ that she will not accept his marriage proposal, but he seems to find this difficult to understand. Through the use of more dialogue it seems to suggest that Rossetti wants to make the point that remaining single is not the message she wants to get across: “For me you’re not the man of men”, rather that women should only marry out of choice if she loves and who is, for her, above all other men.…

“She makes me want to throw up sometimes," she complained to her friends”(Paragraph, 4). A child who wishes their mother dead has very strong dislike towards them. She feels her mother wishes are annoying and uncalled for, which causes tension between their relationships. Another example where she thinks of her mother less is, “Her mother was so simple, Connie thought, that it was maybe cruel to fool her so much” (Paragraph, 11). Connie thought it was easy getting away with being the idealist child of that time period because her mother was too simple to identify or approach her about her actions.…

She remembered the last labored breaths her mother had taken, each a struggle for one last moment of life. She remembered watching that same life pass out of her as she heaved her last, and how it had not been quiet and tranquil as movies and books made dying moments out to be. It had been obvious that her last few moments were filled with pain, as it tried its hardest to catch her one last time before she could physically feel it no more. Her soul had passed on, and her body was no longer hers.…

The narrator feels like her parents expressed that everything she did was not “good enough” according to their expectations, which led to her suicide. She even goes so far as to say, “If only I were a son, shoulders broad as the sunset threading through the pine,”(Mirikitani 10). She feels her gender causes her to be sub-par to her parents’ standards. Since she is a female, she lacks the important feeling of self worth. She repeatedly expresses her previous statement, “ I apologize for disappointing you” (Mirikitani 5). As hard as she works, the results of her efforts are not adequate to earn the approval of her family. Although she states “I’ve worked very hard, harder, perhaps to please you”, she knows that no matter the great effort she puts into a project, it will be insufficient (Mirikitani 7). Her mindset leads her to believe her life is not worth living.…

The father daughter relationship that Jessica and Shylock share shows the audience values of Judaism. The two have a very rocky relationship through out the play and although it appears that Jessica is no more than a rebellious teenager, their relationships and interactions show the foundations of a Jewish family. Shylock shows the rigid rules of the Jewish religion through how he treats Jessica at their home. What the audience knows about Jessica and Shylock’s history is that Shylock locks up Jessica in their house and she is not allowed out. Jessica then undoubtedly has resentment towards her father when she says "Our house is hell, and thou, a merry devil, / Didst rob it of some taste of tediousness" (2.3.1). It is clear to the audience that Shylock not only wants to lock up his daughter to the world he, also doesn 't want Jessica to experience Venetian society when he says "lock up the doors" so the sounds of music don 't drift in from the streets (2.5.5). It becomes very obvious that Jessica’s house is a strict, rule driven household that she does not appreciate or like. Jessica’s life under Shylock’s rules shows the rigidness of the Jewish religion that Jessica was brought up under. These instances, at the beginning of the play, show the audience what Jessica’s life as a Jew is like. It is not until we…
