Nigeria: The Conflict Between Muslims and Christians

Because the two cultures rarely live peacefully within one country, the

conflict between the Muslims and the Christians has left the country split by two

civilizations. Political, economic and ethnic rivalries often fuel violence between

the two faiths.

Christianity has a set of beliefs that causes its followers to live their life in a strict set way. It involves the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians just like Muslims believe there is only one God. Its followers believe that God sent his only begotten son to the earth. Whoever believes in him shall have life in heaven. Jesus Christ was born from a virgin mother Mary, she knew no man. An angel sent a message to Mary that she is chosen to have the son of God. He was raised and lived to show the world of God’s love and to preach God’s teachings. Because there was so much sin in the world, Jesus was sacrificed . He was crucified on a cross and died so that all who believed in him sins shall be washed away. All those who believe and live their lives according to his teachings shall have a place in heaven. A Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ in their daily lives. They not only say they are Christians , but live by strict rules like Christians. They surround themselves with other followers and worship together. This is called fellowship. Christians uses the bible as a story of the past and teaching in which they all must live by Muslims just like Christians believe in only one God. They believe that God or Allah is the sole being in which you should dedicate your way of life to. Only through Allah may you be able to find peace in your life. Muslims believe that there is only one Creator. Christian believes in God had a son Jesus Christ. The Muslims only believe in Allah. The principle is to

    Christianity is different from Islam and Judaism in many ways, one being the holy book that Christians believe in. Over one third of the world is Christians, but nearly 75% of the world celebrates traditions which only Christians believe in. An example of this would be Easter. Easter is when Jesus died for humans on the cross, but nowadays non-believers celebrate it and is treated as a public holiday. This shows how important Christianity is to humans, and also to the world. In the Bible, Jesus was first mentioned in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament. He was depicted as the son of God. ‘14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. ’Jesus’s name was not mentioned. Isaiah’s prophecy was then fulfilled in the gospel of Luke. ‘Was born of a virgin named Mary’ (Luke 1:26-31). Also Jesus had performed many great miracles. Jesus performed the changing of the water to win at the wedding at Cana. ‘7 Jesus said to the servants “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.8 then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” This is the gospel of John 2:7-8. Christians believe Jesus was fully divine and human. Which was why when Jesus was nailed to the cross, the pain he felt was the pain humans would have felt as well.     One of the most complex features of the Nigerian nation is its ethnic composition. Like very other African nation Nigeria labour under triple cultural heritage; euro-Christian tradition, arabico-islamic culture and the indigenous Nigeria thought system. These polarities have each made a contribution to the development of human capital though, the aggressive attitudes of Islam and Christianity in particular has collapsed the capacity of the ethnic nationalities to overcome exclusion and strengthen inclusion. In the north, it is either the Muslims against the Christians, Hausa/Fulani against the Siyawa or the non-state and anti-state contraptions like the Maitatsine religious riots in the 80’s and or Boko Haram disturbances in 2009. In the Middle-Belt, the settler-indigene dichotomy has torn the once peaceful green zone of Nigeria into shreds. The southeast, the south-south and the southwest are similarly guilty of the same sectarian acrimony and everyone else is fighting everyone else. Given the impact of modernization the growth of the democratic culture, the new range of economic, social and political horizons of Nigerians, the only hope of genuine peace and harmonious inter-group relation lies in the acceptance of some form of accommodation of each other and some compromise that is engendered by a seeking together with responsibility, lucidity and tact. Our paper focuses on the variegated population of the Middle-Benue valley and argues that, if its citizens should be a United Nation, the different ethnic nationalities should be welded together and made to place loyalty to the nation.
