Nickel and Dimed Essay
In Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich delves into the `third world' of America while attempting to make a living. She undertakes many noble trades, working in low wage and underappreciated jobs while trying to figure out how the people of this country do it every day. She works at Hearthside and Jerry's in Florida waitressing, with The Maids in Maine cleaning houses, and with Wal-Mart in Minnesota, serving their `guests', all while earning the minimum wage. She also looks to examine the functional and conflict theories of stratification as they relate to the low wage jobs she pursues.
Two very different ideas are presented in the hierarchy of humanity, known as the theories of stratification. The first is the functionalist theory of stratification. This theory holds that, according to Emile Durkheim, "inequalities are good for society..." Certain people are designed and trained to perform certain jobs, and only those people can perform them to their full capacity. The workplace must reward the employee for good jobs and advances in specialization and training. This will induce the employee to work at his or her full potential. The second idea, which juxtaposes the first, is the conflict theory of stratification. This theory poses the idea that any form of social stratification creates a small, powerful group of individuals, and a large group of low wage, working class citizens. This theory also makes the points that, those who are in power, try to keep it, and proceed to create further disadvantages for the working class. The conflict theory in effect states that social inequalities are not good for society as they limit the ability for talented workers to realize their potential and utilize in the workforce.

A single, educated woman – with the ability to rely on conveniences such as emergency cash, a car, and a credit card; a woman who was without children or a family to support – struggled to make ends meet working one or more jobs demonstrates the inadequacy of the minimum wage and its fail to sufficiently supply an individual or family with the means necessary to support the “working poor.” Companies are reluctant to raise the pay of their employees and can punish and/or fire employees who step out of line. “When you enter the low-wage workplace, you check your civil liberties at the door…We can hardly pride ourselves on being the world’s preeminent democracy if large numbers of citizens spend half of their waking hours in what amounts to a dictatorship.” (Ehrenreich 210) The calculated $30,000 “living wage” for a family of three comes to $14 an hour, and 60 percent of Americans earns less than that. In her immersion, Ehrenreich attempts various types of minimum wage jobs such as those that would be categorized as service work like a waitress or a house cleaner.     One of the conditions to Barbara Ehrenreich’s experience in working as an undercover writer was to work minimum wage jobs to see if the process was going to be successful. In Nickled and Dimed, it states, “…the prevailing wages running at $6-$7 an hour… According to the National Coalition for the homeless, it took, on average nationwide, an hourly wage of $8.89 to afford a one-bedroom apartment” (Ehrenreich 3). Even in 1998, before a complete rise in real estate prices and gasoline, a one-bedroom apartment was not affordable still. In a report from the Department of Labor in the United States Whitehouse administration, minimum wage was reprted as $7.25 in the year 2009. With minimum wage only changing by a quarter from 1998 to 2009, it would be an even greater challenge to own a small apartment. In the novel, Ehrenreich found that she could not live off of minimum wage without some government issued help and, even so in today’s economy, it would not be possible to live comfortably and would suggest a greater possibility of being homeless.…

    After reading about the travels Barbara Ehrenreich took in the book Nickel and Dimed as an attempt to “discover some hidden economies in the world of the low-wage worker” to Florida, Maine, and Minnesota, I have been able to deepen my understanding of the harsh reality people face while working in low income jobs.
