Nicholas Sparks Nicholas Sparks is a phenomenal, inspiring, award winning writer. He has sold over a million copies of his books in the United States (Newsmakers). The real question is where did his innovation come from? Nicholas has written two books named Dear John and Message in a Bottle which are unlikely love stories, with desirable connections. These books have touched many Americans, especially because they relate to modern relationships and events. The main themes of Dear John and Message in a Bottle are inspired by the theme tragic endings and keeping faith.

This book was inspired by his mother who died in a horseback riding accident. Message in a Bottle is about two characters named Theresa Osborne and Garrett Blake, who are both “divorced”(“Nicholas Sparks”). Theresa lived in Boston and was a columnist (Contemporary Authors online). Theresa ends up finding a letter on the beach in Cape Cod written to a lady named Catherine signed by Garrett (Sparks 21-23). She ended up publishing it to a column she wrote for and received letters from others which were also by Garrett (Sparks 49-55). Theresa tracked Garrett down in Wilmington, North Carolina at his diving business because she had fallen in love with his letters and wanted to meet him (Sparks 84-86). After meeting Garrett he asked him on a date on his boat, but he still had flashbacks of his wife Catherine while being with Theresa (Sparks 130-131). Later on he asked Theresa out again and opening up more about Catherine and that she was also pregnant. (Sparks 200-204). Garrett admitted he was in love and they started a long distance relationship after she left (Sparks 207). Later in the relationship Garrett ended up finding the letters Theresa was hiding while visiting her. Dear John takes place in North Carolina with a boy named John Tyree, who grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina( Sparks 7) John grew up isolated from typical family relationships , his mother left him at a young age and his father is focused on collecting coins so much that is all he talks and cares about. (Sparks 8-9) He grew up as a rebellious teen but one day decided to take a risk and enlisted in the army. (Sparks 17) One day coming back for a visit from deployment, he had just finished surfing when he saw younger college students hanging out and one of the girls dropped her bag in the water. John dove in and saved it because the others refused and that was how he was introduced to Savannah Curtis (Sparks 25-28). After retrieving her bag from him she invited him to a party later that night (Sparks 28). After getting to know each other John found out that she was there for the organization Habitat for Humanity (Sparks 30). After that, they started to hang out more and John started to adapt to Savannah's life style such as going to church (Sparks 45-52). Also Savannah came to meet John's father and ended up making him come out of his shell and actually communicates with John(Sparks 88-89).
