Hip Hop and Rap music from the latest decades indicated slavery as well as the emancipation with the purpose of making people conscious about the similarities in the American society between the past and the present. Slavery contributed in the creation and the advancement of Rap music.…

Originated in the early 1950’s, rock ‘n’ roll was known to be the world’s most popular and multicultural form of music. Therefore, Rock being a mixture of all the American music that came before it, then dominated the music industry but also extremely influenced everything from politics to social norms. This suggests music had moved away from its roots in Blues and country music and grew into something bigger known simply as rock. Rock ‘n’ roll lost much of the rebelliousness that had initially given it its power but then spread popularity internationally since it became increasingly accepted over time. For example, white musical traditions became integrated with black performers, ultimately encouraging the desegregation movement itself. The…
It is exceedingly interesting the way American culture is unoriginal in every way. Just about every aspect of American culture is in some way based on and/or influenced by people of another nationality as well as people of much different ethnicities than that of the typical white-protestant American. This is proven true through what Americans eat, the way they dance, and even the music they listen. Although America is the birthplace of both jazz and hip-hop, neither was really started by the average white American. But rather, both jazz’s and hip-hop’s beginnings were similarly within the underground world of Black America. The similarities between the paths of these two genres of music are uncanny, especially the way they both began as strictly for African-Americans and then slowly but surely, within the next three decades, emerged in the American mainstream via white artists to eventually be heard around the world.…
The majority of white teenagers, and those within other age brackets, began to see the significance of the Blues in music and lifestyle, and all were worshipping the music and its musicians-white and black. It was because of Blues music that white kids ventured into black areas and had a sense of "fair play" long before the civil rights movement (Blues and Rock). As there will always be, there were those people who were disgusted with this sort of music, behavior, belief, and lifestyle. However, historically and recently, this is disregarded as "conservative fluff" and discarded in a hurry. Once the Blues got this far, there was no mercy and no turning back. It seemed as though Blues music did more for the civil rights movement than Brown vs. the Topeka Board of Education (Blues and Rock). Blues was similar to a small leak on a dam, and once the water broke through, it was best to watch it run its…
The 1950’s were a time where children were basically mini versions of their parents. These teens were the picture perfect children, non-rebellious, safe, and rule obeying. Suddenly, a new music genre called Rock and Roll started to become popularized. Rock and Roll was an new, exciting and dangerous music genre to these vulnerable teens. They listened to this music in private, seeing how almost every adult hated it and couldn't understand how their children could be listening to such “repulsive” music. Rock and Roll hit America like a hurricane. Teenagers strayed away from the music of their parents generation, and started to listen to the music hated by the older generation. In fact, the church hated rock and roll music…
Cultivated music is type of music that is imported to another place or country, whereas Vernacular music is type of music that originally comes from the country. Then, vultivated music in America means that music from other countries that are brought to America. For example: Opera. Opera is a music that originally from Italy. If it is brought to America, it becomes cultivated music in America. In other hand, vernacular music in America is music that is originally from America which is Jazz.…
African-American music has had such an impact on our society today. African-American music became popular in the 19th century after the civil war as musicians of color were hired to play in saloons and brothels. A couple of forms of popular music are spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz and ragtime. Spiritual and gospel music reflected the poverty and oppression of slaves. As Jazz entered the popular culture it provoked a great deal of criticism. An artist know as, Louis Armstrong, had a huge impact in the way white people became to appreciate African American music. Blues music came on to the scene, in which it reflected the emotions and struggles of the poorer segments of the black community. Blacks as well as whites criticized…
People can now set aside their differences and be together. America is a large mix of different people from many countries around the world. However, African Americans were probably the most discriminated against and mocked. Now, African American slang, code, and vernacular in general has become an American way of life. Young Americans happen to be the main target audience for marketers, due to the fact that they are the largest consumers. Young Americans are also the ones who thrive off hip-hop and rap, it has been evolved into everyones culture. Advertisers have turned hip-hop and rap into a superficial money gain. Rappers and hip-hop artists are forgetting what started rap and hip-hop to become apart of society with out the depth. One day the roots of African American culture may be lost in the mix of…
Some people took their racial and gender preferences out on the music, and the performers. But some looked beyond that. Some looked more into the lyrics, and the tone of the songs. The songs helped betray a vast number of people’s emotions and feelings. People may have been unsure of how to think or react to what was happening in the 1960s, but music helped distinct their feelings. Some songs even helped bring more awareness to what was really happening in America. Music in the 1960s helped people relax, and enjoy themselves in the chaotic times, but it also helped some people protest against what was going on. Music greatly influenced the 1960s decade, and is still to this day remembered for all the deep and meaningful songs and artists in that…
If there was no racial segregation in the United States during the 1940’s rock and roll may not have been created. Rock and roll had an overwhelming influence on how white teenagers and black teenagers began to intermingle with each other. The rock and roll “movement” forced bigot Major Record labels to change their business practices, ultimately helping end segregation in America.…
In the 1960s Motown had become a musical miracle; both whites and blacks sought this new and lively form of music to escape the turmoil that had engulfed many cities. Though many whites saw Motown as another form of pop music of the time African American saw it as a way to make decent money and to let their voice and opinions become heard, it offered them unprecedented freedom. Motown helped break down some racial barriers during this era. America during this era was one of gross racial stereotypes. Motown forced America to confront its own feelings about race, community, intolerance, justice and reality. Motown coincided with the emergence of the civil…
What is labeled Black Music today I think has very significant and important meaning to the African American culture because just like the article “Hell Yeah, There’s Still Slam-banging Black Music,” African Americans don’t even have a country to call their own. I think having something simply as a type of music the Black’s created to call their own I don’t think should be a big deal at all and should not be changed. The article also mentioned that everything Black’s did back then became a beauty, especially their music which I think would be easy for anyone to see just knowing the history of African Americans and what they had to do just to be where they are today, slave and discrimination free. There is also plenty of successful African Americans we know about living today and from back then that went through a lot just have some recognition for the African American culture. Some of these successful African Americans not only include Musicians, but also actress and or performers, novel writers, business owners, and today a African American President.…
Motown acts were enjoying a widespread popularity among black/white audiences alike where William “Smokey” Robinson stated “Into the '60s, I was still not of a frame of mind that we were not only making music, we were making history. But I did recognize the impact because acts were going all over the world at that time. I recognized the bridges that we crossed, the racial problems and the barriers that we broke down with music. I recognized that because I lived it. I would come to the South in the early days of Motown and the audiences would be segregated. Then they started to get the Motown music and we would go back and the audiences were integrated and the kids were dancing together and holding hands” Thus stating Motown’s cultural impact.…
Since the mid 1980’s, collective efforts to define deviant music have focused increasingly on two genres heavy metal and rap music. Most of these claims assert that heavy metal and rap music represent a type of audio pornography that endorses sexist, violent and anti religious behaviors. Musical genres such as jazz and blues and the rock and roll of 1940’s and 1950’s were believed to have contributed to teenager’s moral disintegration. In addition to rock music, performers of newer popular styles, particularly heavy metal and rap, have recently come under attack for their perceived potential to negatively influence young audiences. In a 1985 standing room only United State senate hearing, several prominent political families rallied testimony to the harmful effects of pornography and violence present in the lyrics of heavy metal music. Rap music was lambasted just five years later when a recording by a group called 2 live crew was declared obscene by a federal court in Florida and the members of the band were arrested.…
