Network Design

In this paper I will explain what Kudler Fine Foods need to do so the company can make a business decision on what course of action to take to upgrade the infrastructure of their current network. The network Kudler is using is called a bus topology that uses a common backbone to connect all devices. If one of the systems on the network wants communicates to another system, it broadcast a message on the network where the other systems can see the message but the only intended system receives and processes the message. This type of technology is keeping the company at a disadvantage in the competitive gourmet food industry. The company needs to consolidate all three of their locations to a network topology that will help keep the company competitive in the food industry. Computing: Kudlers three facilities is design to utilizes an ethernet bus topologies. This type technology was easy to install and did not require a lot of cabling compared to alternatives. 10Base-2 ("ThinNet") and 10Base-5 ("ThickNet") both were popular Ethernet cabling options many years ago for bus topologies. However, bus networks work best with a limited number of devices. If more than a few dozen computers are added to a network bus, performance problems will likely result. In addition, if the backbone cable fails, the entire network effectively becomes unusable. Centralizing the Network: In order to bring this system up to standards they will need to update to a more centralized computing system which all computing is done on a centrally managed computer system and the users use a dumb terminal (thin client) to connect to these central computers. The cost associated with this has been reduced over the years and was only used previously in enterprise environments but now more businesses are moving over to this type of system. Network Topologies:

The review of the current network used at Kudler Fine Foods was able to determine that the network topology that is being used is the bus topology. The bus network is set-up in such a way that all the network components are connected via CAT5 to the bus or communication line. This configuration is true at sites in the corporation for their workstations, servers, and standalone UPS. A 56k modem is the device that is used by all of the networks communicating to the internet. Although the bus network is very reasonable when it comes to cost, the downfall is that when the backbone goes down, the entire network can encounter an outage that is very difficult to troubleshoot. Another disadvantage this network is the occurrence of signal collision. This happens when two systems are sending signals at the same time to one another, collides with each other and causes to drop both signals. To solve this problem, CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) technology will be set-up in the network, which will put the network into a listen mode before sending, to prevent collisions from taking place.…

Kudler Fine Foods is a specialty and gourmet food company with the home office in La Jolla, CA and two other facilities in Del Mar, CA and Encinitas, CA. The Founder wanted to link all three locations from the home office. Due to recent economic development and overall business success at each of the three locations, the founder future projection was that she would be adding numerous new locations over the next two years. The Founder required an assessment of the network layout to support the combining of the current three facilities and future expansion. Currently there are three network diagrams for the KFF; we need to link the stores in Del Mar and Encinitas to the home store in La Jolla, CA. First, we must identify the Network components required in the Network diagram layout. The current network Topology isn’t set-up effectively or cost efficiently to operate the growing and successful KFF stores. It requires several network, software and system upgrades that would add to the growth of the company.…

A wide area network (WAN) refers to the connection between two or more geographically separated LANS, such as the three locations of Kudler’s Fine Foods in different cities. As Kudler Fine Foods continues to grow the need for connectivity has increased. An enterprise network is required since these are networks that join the computing resources of an organization over LANs, WLANs, and WANs. All of these networks share basic building blocks in order to create the functional networks seen today.…

The utilization of networking hardware is used to connect different computers to a server in the case of my company it will be used to connect the different sections within our company. There are many different types of hardware to include bridges, routers, switches, and even networking cards. Our company will use routers, firewalls, and switches. With the routers and firewalls we will protected from threats to a degree by viruses, and attackers. One of the most commonly used is McAfee Antivirus which is the software that I would present to be used as security software. With the routers and firewalls, it will block any unwanted activity coming across the network. The use of the software allows the use of a security firewall that works with the internet firewall increasing our chances of not being attacked or corrupted by viruses, and hackers. It also provides anti-spyware upon the network, indicates safety of websites, and web protection detects and helps rid the network of any spyware, malware, and viruses, phishing and spam when it comes to email, and web usage. Without both networking hardware and software total security cannot exist.…
