nettles, quickdraw imagery comparison
In nettles imagery is used to describe the nettles: “that regiment of spite”, “green spears” “fierce parade”. Martial imagery is juxtaposed against the domestic setting. They portray the aggressive nature of the nettles but also signify the father’s perspective, as he sees the nettles as a threat against his son and therefore must protect him. This metaphor is continued as the nettles ,“tall recruits”, are “called up” (echoing the language of conscription) and his “son would often feel sharp wounds again” suggesting that this army cannot be defeated, or maybe simply that the father cannot protect his son from the inevitable. “White blisters beaded on his tender skin”: the alliteration of the ‘b’ sound is soothing and emphasises the pain he must feel on his “tender skin”. “He offered us a watery grin”, shows the vulnerability of the son again showing the parents need to protect him but makes the reader question if it justifies the father’s aggression as he “slashed in fury” to get rid of the nettles.

The poem uses the extended metaphor of a gunfight to represent the emotional aggression between the lovers.
‘Like guns’ communication over the phone are being used as a way to emotionally hurt each other. The act of pulling a trigger is intentional, as are their words during this argument. ‘I twirl the phone’ as though it were a gun which suggests a confidence for the speaker. They are willing and ready to use their weapon. Hurting each other is two-way. The poem later says: “wide off the mark” this shows she was ineffective at hurting her lover, or suggests that she didn’t really want to hurt her partner. The poem goes on to say: ‘blast me’ this is a powerful line and the power of what has been said shows that she is hurt and the reader has been affected by what has been said. ‘Down on my knees’ this shows to the reader that she has been wounded by what she has said and has made her weaker. The writer later on describes the kisses at the end of the message as

One way in which the poets present their ideas about the pain of love is through their use of imagery with their poems. For example, they both use metaphors about being ‘wounded’. Fenton’s line ‘I’m one of your talking wounded’ adopts a pun which relates to the expression ‘walking wounded’, used by soldiers to imply resilience. He feels as though love has previously ‘wounded’ him, if not actually finished him off. Similarly, continuing with the theme of violence, Duffy uses an extended metaphor throughout the whole poem which presents the break-up of her relationship as a gunfight in a Western movie. Lexis such as ‘trigger’, ‘silver bullets’, ‘wide of the mark’ and ‘blast me’ presents the effect of breaking up as wounding her physically.…

Quickdraw is a poem about the end and break down of a relationship. Specifically an argument between the speaker and their other half and the feelings felt by the speaker in the poem. It has many similarities and differences with In Paris with You a poem about a very negative relationship with the speaker who is desperately in love with someone who is just using them. The poem uses a play on words and anytime the words Paris and love are mentioned you have to switch them, so Paris means love and love means Paris. These poems have similarities and difference and these can be explored through language techniques and key themes.…

The main theme of the poem is the differing attitudes towards weapons which are symbolic of war. From that stems three other key themes - the debate about the inherent violence in the human spirit, the fascination with weapons versus the disgust for weapons, and the dichotomy that exists between our heads and our hearts. Foulcher also addresses other dichotomies - the past and the present, boys and men, innocence and experience, and of course, most obviously, the classroom and the battle field.…

His enemy had been hit”(O’Flaherty 208). This quote explains how the sniper felt a sense of relief as he pulled the trigger killing his enemy escaping the chance of being killed. Similarly, in the poem, Hardy portrayed the main character as a determined man willing to kill in order to survive. “But ranged as infantry/ And staring face to face/ I shot at him as he at me/ And killed him in my place”(Hardy 5-9). This quote is showing how as the two sides lined up across from each other in battle, he was faced with the decision of whether or not to kill his enemy. Although there were similarities, there were also many differences throughout the plot. For instance, in “The Sniper”, O’Flaherty described how the main character’s curiosity led him to the discovery that he killed his brother. “He wondered did he know him… Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face”…

Both poets, Vernon Scannell and Simon Armitage use varied language techniques to describe the pain that the other person in their relationship is feeling and how this other person in this relationship needs to be protected from being hurt. In ‘The Manhunt’, the injured soldier in the poem is being compared to fine china, for example his collar-bone is described as “the damaged, porcelain collar-bone.” To the reader, this shows and emphasises how extreme his injuries really are and how fragile they have made the soldier. His punctured lung is described as extremely delicate and as if it’s “parachute silk”. This use of imagery show how concerned and tender his wife is for her husband and how she wants to do all she can to protect him. Vernon Scannell also uses the war imagery in ‘Nettles’ as he describes his sons accident. He compares the nettles to weapons and says that they look like “spears” and he later goes on to call them a “regiment”. The use of imagery that Scannell has used help the reader to understand what the poem is really about, and that is the helplessness of parents trying to always be there to protect their children, when this is not always going to be possible. The father was unable to protect his son from the pain that he experienced from falling…

Many symbols in the story give the reader an idea of the war that Neil pictures in his mind. He sees the war to be incredibly violent, and full of blood and anger. This image is shown through the mention of trenches. The word is used repeatedly in the story, suggesting that Neil is very much aware of what happens at war. When Neil is hiding from his father, he builds a trench out of hay in the barn, suggesting that subconsciously, he is trying to prepare his father for what is to come. He thinks that if he can show his father what it is like to be in the army, maybe he will back out. As a young boy, he knows only what he has seen or heard about, which focuses on the violence and danger of going to war. This idea sparks fear within Neil, resulting in anger and rebellion.…

The extract begins in a hostile and sinisterly tone where it details the boys attempt to abduct and seize the sow. "but the sow got away with the sting of another spear in her flank. The trailing butts hindered her and the sharp, cross-cut points were a torment." Using painful imagery such as sting, spear, sharp, cross-cut points to emphasise the sows struggle and anguish in its attempt to escape. The image of multiple spears embedded in the sow 's backside accentuates the vicious and unmerciful temperament of the boys illustrating their willingness to achieve what they believe as pleasurable. "She blundered into a tree, forcing a spear still deeper… any hunter could follow her easily by the drops of vivid blood." Giving the image of excruciating pain as the spear further penetrating into the sow…

Right away, the first two lines before the chorus draw a connection to what was happening between the two and the country. The bullets may act as both a literal and metaphorical form, with the bullets literally acting as weapons used in the revolt, and the “bullets” of criticism and hatred towards the two. Both are stuck in a situation that only results in them running away from the issue. In doing so, the lyrics “we gotta get away from here” resembles the decision they make, fleeing France. However, in the end, the two are eventually caught in their escape and brought back to Paris.…

‘The Shot’s ‘ intense beginning dives straight into Hughes’ perspective of Plath, “Your worship needed a god” , accusingly implying that Plath needed an influence, something or someone beyond her reach, this is carried throughout the poem with repeated use of the term god. Hughes’ abundant use of firearm imagery and bullet metaphors such as “ gold jacketed, nickel tipped”, “trigger” and more clearly “high velocity bullet” which closely tie to the title of the poem and Plath’s personality as a powerful, unstoppable force yet to be reckoned with. A change of tone occurs at line 20 with the use of “But” , from here we see the unveiling of Sylvia’s hidden insecurities and anxieties through “inside your sob-sodden Kleenex” and “Saturday night panics” we begin to see what…

Michael C. Pintard distinctively writes his poems in an interpretive style. His style affects his readers by allowing them to contemplate on the true reason and meaning of the words, phrases and or expressions used in his poems. An example of his interpretive style is seen in one of his poems titled ¨Steel Boot Action Whup¨! , where as he uses his poetry skills and diction to generate phrases and made up vocabulary to emphasize his point on the matter. The tone detected in the poem ¨Steel Boot Action Whup¨! is an irated tone because the overview of the poem is that Michael Pintard is in an unhappy mood and wants to take physical action against whomever he sees a problem with. For example in lines 6 through 10 it is determined that he want to seek revenge on rapists who caused harm to others by kicking them in both of their heads. The action of kicking someone is repeated throughout the poem also to emphasize the title of the poem that relates to a steel boot that is a type of footwear. The irated tone of the poem creates a tense mood for the readers because Michael Pintard bluntly expresses his idea of taking physical actions against people or type of people mentioned in the poem. The way the sentences are structured in the poem also gives us an idea that Michael Pintard likes to emphasize his trains of thought, that can be seen in lines 4,5,39 and 40 where he detaches words such as ¨senseless¨ and¨ into¨. Overall, the message of the poem, seeking revenge is well received because of the choice of style and tone Mr. Pintard wrote the poem in and expressed his…
