According to the textbook neo-aristotelianism was the approach of using the canons of rhetoric as the "units of analysis." In the communication field, this was the first technique used for rhetorical criticism.…

In the Baroque period the art would depict a play, that it was not just a picture but every figure would have meaning, the art was meant to be read just not looked at as decoration. Figures would be drawn with realism, they have depth in the art, and they are almost falling off the page. They used dark shades and lights to show realism in their paintings. This was brought on with the further discovery of how our universe was formed, how we are not the center of the universe and also with that discovery, we discovered that Europe is not the middle of the Earth as well. Each painting had a story, told about us, about real people and there was more realism than before. Sculptures were made to be experienced, they were made not as standing men but men in action, they told a story in each sculpture that was made in this period.…
France is known for being one of many artist powerhouses of the 18th century. The art styles reflected the attitude and culture of the time. Two major styles, Rococo and Neoclassical varied in similarities and differences such as theme, style, and whether the artist was influenced politically or philosophical. It’s true that Rococo was taken by storm over night at the dawn of Neoclassical. However both of the styles suited it’s era from the carefree life styles of the aristocracy to the inner nature of the people of the revolution.…
Neo-Confucianism's purpose was to unite the fundamental nature of being, without any evidence, of Buddhism and Daoism. It maintained that the world is real, not an illusion, and that in order to be fulfilled, one must participate not withdraw. Zhu Xi was the primary contributor to Neo-Confucianism, he accepted that the world would be divided into a material world and a transcendent world. He believed in the principles that were controlled by the law of yin and yang and the five elements. The main goal was to be able to transcend the material world and achieve an identity with the Supreme Ultimate, Tai Ji. He believed you learned through investigation.…
The style, originally from Rome, but its popularity exploded in France, as a generation of French and other European art students finished their training and returned from Rome to their home countries with newly-rediscovered Greco-Roman (Classical) ideals. As a testimony of the significant influence the Greeks and Romans had on Western civilization, interestingly the term itself is a merger of words derived from both ancient languages spoken by them; neos (Greek for “new”), classicus (Latin for “first class”) and ismos (Greek for “doctrine” or “ideology”). (cite)Neoclassical art style was widely adopted and popularized by French artists, since France was the center of culture and art in Europe at that time. The art movement was not limited to painting and sculpture; it was also manifested in literature, architecture and music, embraced by artists all over Europe and America. Born on the eve of the Age of Revolution, it reflected the intellectual, social and political changes of that period and it “became the semiofficial voice of the French…

Leonardo Bruni and Francis Petrarch were two very eloquent and esteemed authors of their time; however, that is not to say that there was no opposition to their views. In fact, many disapproved of their attitudes toward classical authors and the time period but even then that opposition sometimes served to define their characters and reinforce their eloquence. Bruni and Petrarch revere certain authors for their eloquence, and wisdom while condemn others for their ignorance. Because of their ideas of what defines a well-expressed and articulate author and what defines and unapprised one, their views of classical authors often equal each other and at other times rival each other.…
Reading chapter 15, I learned about many writers and philosophers that influenced the ground-breaking ideas of the Neo-Classical Era. The people that intrigues me the most were Mary Wollstonecraft and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Wollstonecraft was a pioneer for women’s rights and Rousseau heavily influenced the French Revolution. These two writers stood out to me the most.…
The historical documents of the eighteenth century are examples of the literary movement of Neo-Classicism and its characteristics which are evidenced in this century’s writer's’ works. These characteristics are sometimes found in abundant quantities or limited amounts in each of this period’s documents: logic / reason, symmetry / balance, and lucidity / clarity. Each document of this historical period was influenced by the Neoclassical characteristics which were considered significant in the rhetorical and compositional expression of that age. So, too, did each of the writers’ documents present a unique study about the author’s intentions for his creating his work. In Thomas Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense, the author's idea of personal equality,…

Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been thousands of books by many different people in the past and present, transcendentalism falls amongst all of these ideas. Great philosophers and writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were two of many that established the mindset that taught people that our spirits have deep connection with nature and that our ideas transcend the natural world as we see it. Both Emerson and Thoreau emphasized greatly on forming decisions without the input of others as well as being able to do what one enjoy rather than fitting in with conformity just to be accepted by society. People who practice Transcendentalism occasionally separate themselves from the world and get in touch with nature to be at peace with themselves. But traditional society was not too fond with the idea of people being transcendentalist, the ideas of nonconformity and free thought was intolerable to the fabricated social order of society. Though the general idea of transcendentalism has its strengths and could very well be practiced and a wonderful philosophy to live out, there are some weaknesses to the consequences of the actions some may do in order to do what they believe in. With a traditional conform culture, believing and practicing the acts of transcendentalism often caused trouble to the liberals who believed in individualism.…
