Brin’s coming to America has led to one of the most important contributions to the internet, but undoubtedly, this isn't the only aspect of American culture, where we can evidence Russian influx. No greater compliment could be paid to a Russian immigrant, or immigrant, for that matter, than to use Jerome Kern’s words stating that Irving Berlin, the Belarussian composer, had no place in American music, but rather was American music (Johnson 56). Irving Berlin was born in Siberia, Russia, the youngest of eight children, during a time of turbulence within the Soviet world. As if the harsh environment of Siberia were not enough of an unfavorable start for the young Irving, his birth to a Jewish family provided even more challenges. For after the…

Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are great in their roles as the main victims of the three masked assailants. Another great thing about the actors in this film is that they are not major, award-winning Hollywood actors that everybody has heard of. This is an advantage because if this movie starred Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, then many people wouldn’t have taken it so seriously. Liv Tyler is probably the most known actor of the group, mainly because of her father, who is a celebrity himself. The three strangers are played by Kip Weeks, Gemma Ward, and Laura Margolis. These actors are definitely not known by much of the public, and have acted in few movies and shows. They played the three masked invaders to perfection. Their parts were not played too dramatically and overly violent. Instead they portrayed the masked assailants in a creepy, sneaky, sly, and ghost like manner. This intensifies the overall eeriness of the situation, because you do not know when they will pop up next. Out of all three, Gemma Ward, who played the blonde girl in the doll face mask, definitely stood out. Her character was the only of the three invaders to have dialogue, which she only uses a few times in this film. Her character can be easily seen as a scary person to the viewers. She uses a monotone voice for her character, showing that her character has no emotion and that she will not feel any remorse in anything that she does. Examples include…

Halloween - Halloween Halloween is a holiday that is intrinsically linked with Death. With it’s roots tied into All Saints Day and Samhain, Halloween is wrapped up in death. However where All Saints Day and Samhain were serious events in culture, Halloween is a playful jab at Death. Nowhere is that more evident, then in the concept of the Haunted House. Death is not celebrated or embraced in this Halloween tradition, but rather it is used as a thrill, something to make life more exciting. As a child, I remember vividly the Haunted houses that the schools put up, and going to Knott’s Scary Farm.... [tags: Papers]…

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. I loved looking at the other children’s costumes and makeup. I enjoy seeing doctors in white coats, witches with pointed hats, and superheroes running up and down the streets. Sometimes I would end up crossing paths with my school friends and we’d compare how heavy our bags were, which houses gave full sized candy bars, and which houses gave out apples instead. I remember the anticipation after trick-or-treating as a child because my parents wouldn’t let me see what candy I received until we were back home. The parents of my best friend at the time would decorate their home as a haunted house each year. Each…
