NCO Responsibility and Property Accountability

With great power comes great responsibility… As a Non Commissioned Officer we have great power, to influence, to mentor, provide motivation, and we hold others lives in our hands. This power is not to be taken lightly at all. Responsibility is defined as a particular burden of obligation upon one who is responsible, reliability or dependability. In this paper we will examine the role of the Non Commissioned Officer his/her duties and responsibilities, the Army Values that help provide a foundation for the Army as a whole, The Non Commissioned Officers Creed which helps provide guidance and stability for all Non Commissioned Officers, and property accountability which is of great importance because as leaders we are responsible for a wide range of equipment as well as personnel. In closing we will discuss how personal actions and mistakes can influence an individual soldier and unit. The role of the Non Commissioned Officer is one of great importance. As a Sergeant in the U.S. Army on all levels such as Command Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major, Master Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Staff Sergeant, all the way down to the Sergeant and even to Corporals, They all have basic responsibilities and specific responsibilities to uphold. Since the Sergeant is the one in direct contact with soldiers and scopes their mentality of what the army is and how it operates along with a number of other things we will focus on the Sergeants’ responsibilities today. The sergeant operates in an environment where the sparks fly , where the rubber meets the road. The sergeant can be best described as being where the axe meets the stone. Although not the lowest level of rank where command is exercised, this level is the first at which enlisted soldiers are referred to as sergeant, and of all the grades of the Non Commissioned Officer this one , very possibly, has the greatest impact on the lower ranking soldiers.     The Creed of the Noncommissioned Officer is, to some, just words that must be uttered during ceremonies and the times when a Soldier earns their Sergeant stripes. To others, there is no higher thought and it’s these Soldiers who spend their time while in uniform trying their hardest to uphold everything that is written in those paragraphs. When I entered six some years ago, I had no clue such a creed ever existed. Although it has been rewritten in different ways, the NCO Creed still begins each paragraph with one of three letters: N-C-O. As the “yardstick” in which NCOs measure themselves, it continues to guide and reinforce the values of each new generation of NCOs. As former Sergeant Major of the Army Gene C. McKinney said "The NCO creed... is my rock and should be the foundation on which all NCOs build their two ideals- leadership and professionalism." This is what the NCO creed means to me.…

    The rank structure goes back to the 1700’s. The rank structure was put into place so that the soldiers had someone that was there to give out orders; also the rank structure was there to teach the newer enlisted respect. If the rank structure was not in place, there would be no order or discipline in the army. The United States ARMY is the World’s strongest army. And it is all because we have order and discipline threw out all of the ranks. When we know that the person out ranks us we need to show the proper respect that they have earned through being in the military and doing their job. As a soldier that has had a lot of mistakes with respecting the rank structure, I know how hard it may be. But all in all you want to respect the persons rank. It does not do anything to the person that you are disrespecting. The one thing that it does do is make them mad. And in all honesty they have a reason to get mad. They have earned their way. They were a private once. It is not like they joined the army as a sergeant. They had to fight their way through the ranks just as most of us have and probably will continue to do. I have always lived by the saying; respect is earned, not given. Well I realized something. The noncommissioned officer has earned the respect that must be shown. If you do not see that they deserve respect. Guess what, the army feels and knows that they do deserve the respect of all their subordinates. So let us all do our selves a favor.     As the Army transitions from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the organization is well served to take a long look in the mirror. After ten plus years of deployments, our combat tested warriors are sure to possess more than enough valuable knowledge to reinforce and improve upon our status as a profession. A TRADOC published paper explains “to be a professional is to understand, embrace, and competently practice the expertise of the profession.” I believe the profession of arms exists and there are many components that reinforce this argument.     I am writing this essay because I disrespected a non commissioned officer. I do apologize for what I did and have said. I have learned from my mistake and I see why I am to do this essay and that is to show that disrespecting a non commissioned officer will not be tolerated and two give clear understanding of the impact that disrespecting a Non Commissioned officer has on others. For many reasons the Non Commissioned Officers keep the moral up and motivate soldiers and encourage them to do their very best and showing disrespect to the NCO’s not only lowers moral, it also makes it to where the NCO thinks less of the person and lowers the person’s creditability. There is a possibility of Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) actions taken against the soldier.
