I. Introduction A. Throughout history many dictators have ruled their country based on fear. B. Adolf Hitler was a very powerful and ruthless dictator who was a brilliant, but sick minded person. C. Saddam Hussein was another very powerful ruler who used fear tactics to gain and maintain power. D. Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein both were extremely cruel rulers that were feared by many people. E. Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein are similar in foreign policies, unification of followers, political affiliations, invasions, crimes against humanity, and religious opposition and are different in the reasons they got power and economic policies.

II. Foreign Policies (Similar) A. Adolf Hitler 1. Hitler had very few allies and didn’t trust other countries. 2. Hitler disregarded the requests of other nations. B. Saddam Hussein 1. Saddam also had very few allies and had no trust in other countries. 2. Saddam also disregarded requests of other nations. III. Unification of followers (Similar) A. Adolf Hitler 1. Hitler brainwashed young people with his racial ideology. 2. Hitler blamed Germany’s economic failure on nations who opposed him and different ethic and religious groups. 3. A major component in unifying his followers was using fear tactics. A. Saddam Hussein 1. Saddam Hussein brutally beat and brainwashed people so that they would follow him. 2. Saddam also blamed Iraq’s economy failure on nations who opposed him and different ethnic and religious groups. 3. Saddam used fear tactics like torturing and killing people. IV. Political Affiliations (Similar) A. Adolf Hitler
1.Hitler was the founder and leader of the Nazi party.
2. Hitler and the Nazi’s supported Anti-Marxism and Anti-Semitic.
3. Hitler’s political party (Nazi) was very nationalistic. B. Saddam Hussein
1. Saddam joined the Baath political party in 1956 and later became the secretary general.
2. The Baath party supported Pro-Arab and Anti-Semitic.
3. Saddam’s political party (Baath) was very nationalistic similar to the Nazi’s.
V. Invasions (Similar) A. Adolf Hitler 1. Hitler invaded its neighboring countries. 2. Hitler invaded countries such as Poland for its resources. 3. Hitler invaded other countries because his own beliefs saying that they rightfully belonged to Germany. 4. A major reason Hitler invaded countries because he wanted to expand his empire (Third Reich). B. Saddam Hussein 1. Saddam invaded its neighbor country, Kuwait. 2. Saddam’s main reason for this invasion was for its resources like oil. 3. Another reason for the invasion was because at one time Kuwait was part of Iraq and Saddam felt that it rightfully belonged to Iraq. VI. Religious Opposition (Similar) A. Adolf Hitler 1. Hitler required all churches to sign allegiances to the Nazi regime. 2. Hitler closed down Catholic schools. 3. Hitler merged all Protestant sects into one. 4. Hitler attacked and killed Jews B. Saddam Hussein 1. Saddam required the majority Shiites to submit to his secular Baathist branch of Sunni minority. 2. Saddam attacked and killed Shiite Muslims.
VII. Crimes Against Humanity (Similar) A. Adolf Hitler 1.Hitler committed many crimes against humanity. 2. Hitler set up concentration camps, basically having human slaves. 3.Hitler would give orders for prisoners of war to be murder for no reason. 4.Hitler committed one of the largest genocides in history killing over 11 million Jews, gays, gypsies, disabled, P.O.W’s, innocent civilians. 5.Hitler’s hatred for Jews resulted in about 6 million Jews being killed. This was called the Holocaust. Hitler was attempting to eliminate the Jews completely (ethnic cleansing.) B. Saddam Hussein 1. Saddam also committed many crimes against humanity. 2. Saddam was trialed and found guilty for torturing and killing 148 men and boys in a Shiite village called Dujail. 3. Like Hitler, Saddam attempted ethnic cleansing by trying to wipe out the Kurdish People 4. Saddam killed about 50,000 Kurds in the process.

VIII. Reasons They Got Power (Different) A. Adolf Hitler 1. Hitler used Germany’s failing economy to gain power 2. Hitler had very powerful speeches that won the votes of his people by saying how he would fix the economy and bring Germany’s power back. 3. Hitler used men called “Brown Shirts” to silence anybody opposing ideas. B. Saddam Hussein 1. The Baathist party seized power by assassinating current leader 2. Bakr’s resigned and then Saddam became president.
IX. Economic policies (Different) A. Adolf Hitler 1. Hitler’s ran a mixed economy of free market and central planning. 2. Hitler preserved a little capitalism in order to raise the economy. 3. Hitler kept big businesses under government control. 4. Hitler’s economic policy was very successful. B. Saddam Hussein
1. Saddam kept Iraq’s economy under a military dictatorship
2. Saddam modernized the Iraq economy
