Over 400 years ago, the Powhatan Indians inhabited a place called Jamestown, Virginia. Their every-day life was disrupted, though, when, in 1607, a ship carrying men from England came to claim their land, making Jamestown their new capital. This could have been seen as a bright opportunity for both parties: the Powhatan Indians could have shared their knowledge of the land they occupied, and the English could have shared some of the skills and technology brought over with them. But, of course, the two groups found that they had many differences. They had a hard time sharing and trading because of how different they were, such as in their belief systems, materials and resources, and their living environments to name a few.…

In the play God and the Indian, it can be argued that Johnny (Lucy) Indian is not actually present in the story at all as a physical why person, but rather that she is a representation of George’s guilt of what he did to Johnny, and a representation of all Natives who were forced into the residential school system as a whole, taken away from there families and culture. There are many references and suggestions in the play through quotations from one of the characters or stage descriptions that can prove that Johnny was never present with George. It is possible that throughout the whole of the play George never has a conversation with the real Johnny Indian, because at the very end of the play, after Johnny has left the office, George…

The dispute over land between the Navajo Tribe and Hopi Tribe has been an on going dispute since the late 1800 's. Although it might not seem like a high priority topic of conversation for most people, it is a very personal and sentimental topic for these two tribes. The Navajo population outnumbers the Hopi by a ratio of ten to one, while the amount of Hopi land has been reduced from its original size. To understand this complex situation between the two tribes, "A comprehensive solutionrather than case-by-case negotiationis needed to solve the numerous land dispute issues confronting the Navajo and Hopi tribes" (Hardeen 1985: 9). After reading two major city newspapers and two Native American newspapers, it is evident in their discussion the differences of the two nations and yet the similarities of their goals.…
The discovery that Native Americans' culture is not static, is a relatively new one. With the aid of modern archeology, we now know that the Natives were very complex and were ever changing. The evidence we have now is still basic, but we can still learn a lot from it. Because of the lack of evidence, a lot of controversy is attributed to Native Americans. Some people believe that Natives were perfect beings, living in harmony with nature and others believe that they were savages due to human sacrifices, wars, etc. Natives are also often compared to Europeans who like them, engaged in warfare as well. One large difference is that Europeans had more capability to cause destruction compared to the Natives, due to their technology and organization…

The native peoples believed in the forming of friendships with the colonists while still keeping a close eye on them. These friendships were meant to set diplomatic…
