National Intigration in Malaysia
This article examines the direction of ethnic politics in Malaysia by investigating the 2008 election results and the subsequent political maneuverings of political parties following the election. The results do not clearly demonstrate the demise of ethnic politics; however, the communal political paradigm of the Barisan Nasional Party (BN) has become increasingly ineffective in its attempts to appease both Malay and non-Malay communities. Following the election, the BN seems to have moved towards the adoption of a multiethnic agenda, whereas its affiliated parties have chosen to maintain their communal political paradigm. Furthermore, the Pakatan Rakyat has not outlined a clear multiethnic platform and has failed to reject communal politics. The Malaysian political paradigm has yet to shift qualitatively away from ethnic politics. • View full text • Download full text
One of the key concepts of national integration in Malaysia is to increase and develop the country economically. This is to ensure that people from various ethnic groups here can learn to tolerate each other and work

Accommodation has been proven to be more effective than assimilation throughout the process of managing the minority population in Southeast Asia through its various successes. Accommodation recognises ethnic differences of minority communities through the integration of minority differences into the majority dominant culture. On the other hand, assimilation ignores ethnic differences of minority communities through the enforcement of minority groups to conform to a majority dominant culture. Accommodation has resulted in a more successful management of minority problems by having few or almost no frequent or intense conflicts and absence of political splits or divisions within government along ethnic, ideological or religious lines. However, there are scenarios present whereby accommodation has proven not to be the most effective in managing minorities as they could potentially expose vulnerable parts of the government and Though it cannot be forgotten that accommodation strategies have been wildly successful and are the reason for the racial harmony present in many Southeast Asian states of today.…

CHANDRA MUZAFFAR IT was 20 months ago that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak formally announced his 1Malaysia concept. We are now in a position to examine the challenges facing the idea, to reflect upon its achievements and to look ahead. The first of the challenges comes from vested interests with a stake in perpetuating ethnic dichotomies that are inimical to national unity. Among the Malays and Bumiputeras, there are groups who abuse the Special Position embodied in the Constitution and in certain public policies to advance their own interests. They alienate not only the vast majority of non-Malays but also a significant segment of the Malay and Bumiputera populace. Likewise, the pronounced push for Chinese primary and secondary education within the Chinese community, in contrast to its passive approach to education in the national language, has created a great deal of disillusionment among Malays who feel that the former are not inclined towards integration that acknowledges the identity of the land.…

Malaysian politics is just like an orgy. Everyone screws everyone. The only thing is one must be careful though. In all that exchanging of partners going on one must not make the mistake of screwing one's own partner. This would defeat the objective of an orgy where one is supposed to exchange partners and not indulge with one's own partner, which could be done in the privacy of your home. But then this sometimes poses a problem when one is not too clear about which one is one's own partner and which one must be screwed instead. And this is what Malaysian politics has been reduced to: a crisis of confusion as to who is the ‘victim of the day' and who is your ‘partner'.…

Many nation-states in Africa, Asia, and the Americas are culturally diverse, and are 'multicultural ' in a descriptive sense. In some, communalism is a major political issue. The policies adopted by these states often have parallels with multicultural-ist policies in the Western world, but the historical background is different, and the goal may be a mono-cultural or mono-ethnic nation-building - for instance in the Malaysian government 's attempt to create a 'Malaysian race ' by 2020.[25]…
