National government
Department of Education (DfE) have a role to lead the whole network of people who work with young people and children. This means being responsible for drawing up education policy for example Early Years Foundation and the National Curriculum from which nurseries and schools operate. Also it looks at new ways of developing the quality of services available to children under the five outcomes of Every Child Matters. The Department of Education has also set up and administers the school, league tables other roles includes * Developing workforce reform. * Funding research into education based projects and those which are concerned with children and young people. * Promoting integrated working for all those who work with children and young people. * Developing the role of third sector (those who are non-government – voluntary and community organisations, charities and other who work with children.)
Local government
The local government department of education provides services to schools in the local area in the form of advice and support. The local education authority is responsible for providing accessible services for * Staff training and development. * Special education needs. * The curriculum, including early years. * Promoting community cohesion. * School management issues. * Behaviour management. * The development of school policies.
The local authorities will need documentation which will outline their own vision and plans for the development of government based initiatives for example this will be through their Local Children and Young Peoples Partnership (CYPP) plans. Also in a similar way to schools policies. The local authorities will have policies which relate to wider issues, such as their own guidelines for schools to use restraint or guidance on the use of medicines.
Some local education authorities will employ specialist to deal with different curriculum areas,
