Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writings have had the history of relating to a certain times in his life. The stories were not fully based on what he went there or what his family had done, but the idea of them had come his imagination and from his life. The guilt and alienation that “The Minister’s Black Veil” has seems to have a relation to the guilt that Hawthorne felt about what his family had done in Salem. Hawthorne’s desire to separate himself from his family was very strong. He moved out of Salem and he changed his name by simply adding a “w” to his name to distance himself even more form them. The Scarlet Letter is the book Nathaniel Hawthorne is perhaps most famous for. Set in Puritan New England, it is a story of the love between a preacher (Arthur Dimmesdale) and a young woman (Hester Prynne) whose husband is presumed dead. When their encounter produces a child, Hester is forced to wear a scarlet letter “A” (representing “Adultery”) upon her bosom for the rest of her life, as she refuses to give the identity of the child’s father. She then becomes somewhat of a hermit, trying her hardest to avoid human contact. Hawthorne was known to feel guilty about the intolerance of his Puritan ancestors. After all, one of them was a judge at the infamous Salem Witch trials. His mother became withdrawn from the world after the death of his father, and Hawthorn also withdrew himself from society after graduating college. This family history of isolation might have been Hawthorne’s inspiration for the isolation of Hester Prynne in his novel. When Hester’s “dead” husband pops up onto the scene, he is obviously furious at Hester for her infidelity and vows to extract revenge on her baby’s father. This eventually leads to Dimmesdale’s death and the end of the novel. The Scarlet Letter is obviously a fictitious account of the doomed love between Hester and Arthur, but is it perhaps realistic fiction? Did Hawthorne stray from a realistic representation of Puritan lifestyle, or is his book an accurate account of the “Puritan Way?”…

Isolation, pride and guilt are all themes Heathrow used in The Scarlet Letter. Hester and Dimmesdale are good examples of the theme of isolation. In the previous chapter, we see them leaving their home to have a better future together as a family. In this chapter, they were getting a boat ride to leave the area to start a new life as a family. This resulted in them still being quite isolated from the “real world”. You can also see the theme of pride in this chapter through Dimsdale. Dimsdale is going back to some of the memorable moments, both good and bad, before the scarlet letter issue and reflects. “..and [the girl was] won by the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale's own sermon” is a good quote to show his pride. In context, this quote seems like…

When Hawthorne first began writing, he had the air of a transcendentalist. But after some time, he began to stray away from the aspect of transcendentalism and soon, his writings even displayed a sort of disdain for the movement. Hawthorne soon found himself immersed in the dark romanticism movement. Dark Romanticism was a new style in literature and Hawthorne was amongst one of the first authors within the growing genre. This style of writing is prominent in his story Young Goodman Brown. Published in 1835, Young Goodman Brown presents the struggle between good and evil and the concept of original sin. The story was one that dealt with how evil could be presented and perceived. The story also displayed Hawthorne's Puritan background and one could infer Hawthorne's disdain for this link. In 1850, Hawthorne published The Scarlet Letter. The story was another way that Hawthorne presented his disdain and criticism of the Puritans and their beliefs. The Scarlet Letter quickly became Hawthorne's most well known literary work and sold a few thousand copies upon being published. People were instantly intrigued with the novel and Hawthorne became a well-known…

The influence of Puritan religion, culture and education along with the setting of his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, is a common topic in Nathaniel Hawthorne's works. In particular, Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" allows the writer to examine and perhaps provide commentary on not only the Salem of his own time but also the Salem of his ancestors. Growing up Hawthorne could not escape the influence of Puritan society, not only from residing with his father's devout Puritan family as a child but also due to Hawthorne's study of his own family history. The first of his ancestors, William Hathorne, is described in Hawthorne's "The Custom House" as arriving with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 "with his Bible and his sword" (26). A further connection can also be seen in his more notable ancestor John Hathorne, who exemplified the level of zealousness in Puritanism with his role as persecutor in the Salem Witch Trials. The study of his own family from the establishment of the Bay Colony to the Second Great Awakening of his own time parallels the issues... .of faith in God, in mankind, and in ourselves, guide us along our path.
