My Fight with My Best Friend. This story is about true friendship and getting over the small things… My best friend, Crystal, is a short 5 foot 4 inch hot head, that can be caring, but she lets little things bother her, just like I do, and she gets angry quickly, also like me. Maybe that is why we are such good friends, we are so much alike. We have been friends for about 7 years now and last year we had the biggest fight where we didn’t speak for months. It seemed like so much happened in that time that we really missed out on some of the most important days of each other’s lives. It started with my second child’s birthday, Olivia. In middle of April, when spring weather is fabulous and the flowers are blooming and birds singing, Crystal was over at my house planning Olivia’s first birthday party. We took a few weeks off from planning her wedding so that we could focus on the birthday party, I was going to be the maid of honor so I was the one helping her do everything, so she was the one helping me for my daughter’s party. We had the windows up, enjoying the fresh air, and listening to music, and my oldest son, Trevor, and Olivia playing in the back bedroom. We were in the floor with every shade of pink paper you could imagine, cutting pretty scalloped circles out for the “Minnie Mouse” themed party décor. The party was only a week away, and I was getting very excited as was Crystal because she and Olivia share a birthday. I know that is just awesome, my best friend and my daughter share the same birthday! We still had a lot to do, but Crystal was over at my house every day helping me finish the preparations for the party, so we were both working just as hard on it. Well only 2 days before the party Crystal met me at Wal-Mart, on a Thursday when it wasn’t going to be so busy, so that we would have plenty of time to really make sure we got all of the groceries for the party. So we got all of the food, and I

We see animals every day. They are our pets, companions, and, to some, family. They are also our dinner, new jacket or bag, and the pain behind our household products. So when does it qualify as cruel, or even inhumane? What is animal cruelty? According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) “Intentional cruelty, or abuse, is knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, socialization, or veterinary care. Maliciously torturing, maiming, or killing an animal.” Three major examples of animal cruelty today are found in the food industry, shelters, and testing facilities.…

Everyone is familiar on some level with the drab sort of dry-as-a-bone scientific literature students are forced to read and attempt to digest. But perhaps not as many have been exposed to any sort of scientific literature relayed in a narrative style, even though those who have probably retained that information more clearly than those who have only perused long-winded text books. The fact of the matter is that when information is presented in a manner that is contextualized through narration, it is more readily retained and recalled. Amongst examples used to illustrate the point, one Stephen Jay Gould’s Wonderful Life: The Burgess Shale and the Nature of History will provide a counter-example with which to contextualize the thesis, backed by scientific fact that lends itself toward that same thesis. Also of note is the irony that this paper is written in an expository fashion.…

The quote, “Live each moment like your last because tomorrow may never come,” is commonly overused, but the truth behind it is shocking. As an emotional and indecisive teenage girl I would often scream, “I just want to be an adult and be able to do what I want already!” At the time this seemed like a logical statement, but adulthood came faster than I imagined. The many quarrels over extended curfew, cleaning my room, or going out whenever I wanted are now humorous memories. I recall many times engaging in conversation with my mother about how badly I wanted to grow up. Without any hesitation she would always reply with, “Be patient. It will be here before you know it, and by then, you will wish you were this age again.” I often rolled my eyes and sarcastically agreed with her. The power of our words are sometimes incomprehensible to the human mind, but we have the power to cherish every moment, speak positively, or speak negatively over our lives.…

When I was in high school, being tan and fit was a big deal. Every senior had a membership at the local gym. As soon as my senior year began, I got a membership. With the membership you could either receive three months of free tanning, or a month with a personal trainer. Because I knew I did not need help working out, I chose the free tanning. I would work out almost every day right after classes were over. I also would tan after working out. Tanning became a luxury for me. By tanning constantly to fit in, I learned that high schools definition of beauty would eventually hurt me.…

The United States has a history of discrimination and that has greatly influenced many parts of our country. Even after the Civil War racial inequality was still a way especially in the confederate South for a hundred years. Discrimination greatly affected minorities in all aspects of their life. A minority was any person who was not a white male. It mainly affected their education and job opportunities and say they had in the government. However in 1964, the United States passed civil rights laws. It was called the Civil Rights Act. The act banned discrimination based on a person's color, sex, national origin, and race. It mainly protected the rights of African Americans and other minorities. The Civil Rights Act said minorities have the right to vote, use hotels, restaurants, movies, parks, and any other public place. The law also said that public schools had to be desegregated. Also funds from programs the promoted segregation were taken away. The act also included the prohibition of job discrimination and the creation of the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. The equal employments opportunities commission was a great step in ending discrimination. What it did were ban employers from discriminating against someone for any reason. Even though the Civil Rights Act was put into place a problem still remained. This problem was minorities lacked skill and proper education to do jobs which would put them on the same playing field as whites. So President Kennedy came up with Affirmative Action.…

Becoming a mother at a young age was very stressful at times. I wanted to continue my education but it was hard being a single mother. So returning to school was a must for me, but the question was when? Returning to school was a struggle, but eventually I got on the right mind frame and became focused after getting my daughter more than half way through school herself. Now I am attending school. I just want to share with you briefly the journey it took for me to return. Between the years of 1997 when my daughter was born and 2002, we struggled to make ends meet so I had to work two jobs just to take care of my daughter. My mother watched her as much as she could and when she couldn’t I tried to pay a baby sitter. So in order to pay the bills and have a place to live there was no time for an education for mommy. And at the time I really don’t think I cared. However in 2001 I and my mother discussed me returning to school when my daughter started kindergarten in the fall of 2002. I told her I would consider it if she would babysit. We never discussed it again.…
