Narrative Techniques In The Film Pete's Dragon
The film I selected was Pete's Dragon an adventure/fantasy film which I altered to a horror film. Throughout the trailer, I used various techniques to subvert the film's meaning. In scenes where the main character, Pete was stuck in the forest, I used dramatic music and dimmed the lighting, creating a more intense and ominous mood. I also utilised quick cuts of the dragon to convey a sense of chaos and terror. Close ups were another technique I used, capturing the fear and terror of Grace and Natalie when they first saw Elliot the dragon. This, used in conjunction with quick cuts created the impression that Elliot was a fierce, untamed beast. In conclusion, by using lighting, music, quick cuts and close ups I was able to change a story about

    When creating a teaser trailer, it is important for us to get audience feedback. Firstly, we decided to use Survey Monkey which is an online survey tool. In this survey we asked people a set of 9 questions so we can get their thoughts on which sort of trailer appeals to them the most. This is so we can create a target audience for our teaser trailer in order to get the feedback from them. By looking at the audience feedback we took into consideration that their first choice was psychological horror and supernatural horror. In this way we developed on our ideas and started researching on black swan and the omen. Finally our main idea was Yangshen, which is a supernatural horror. We gave our trailer a unique element by making our protagonist a Buddhist. This is where the name Yangshen comes from which means ‘sacred one’. Then we thought about having a monk in our teaser trailer in order to show it to our audience that the protagonist really is a Buddhist. In order for us to develop more on this idea of ours, we filmed a several scenes with the Buddhist protagonist and the Buddhist monk.     The aims of the production have been met because I have produced a piece of film that has stuck to the conventions of horror which were aimed at a specific audience demographic. My production has extreme close ups to emphasise the subject and has an establishing shot showing the location. Establishing shots show isolation which is a convention of the horror genre. Point of view shots make it more realistic and allow the audience to feel immersed in the film by seeing what the character sees. There’s dark non-diegetic music to create a scary atmosphere and there’s a theme of death and the supernatural. A character is killed within the first 5 minutes of the film and this happens in almost all slashers and it is effective in setting the mood for the rest of the film. Long shots have been included to increase tension and put the audience on edge and short cuts are used to speed the action up and create panic. There’s a clear binary opposition of good vs. Evil and a revenge plot. The sound of the heartbeat (non-diegetic) represents the fear the protagonist is feeling when she realises she is about to die and when her heartbeat stops it not only represents her death but also connotes the loss of her innocence.…
