Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: Logically Emotional Appeal

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, is a moving written account of Frederick Douglass’ harrowing experiences as a slave, and his journey into freedom. In his critical essay “Douglass and Sentimental Rhetoric,” Jefferey Steele argues, that despite being objective, Douglass’ account is mixed with Pathos, complicating the straightforward chronicle. While pathos is evident in the text, it does not complicate the memoir’s straightforwardness. In fact, Douglass’ straightforward tone naturally co-exists with the pathos in his story. Douglass’ logically driven narrative is emotional within itself, and by providing the logical sequences he creates pathos, because the events in his life were so traumatic. Within the subtext, the combination of pathos and logos attacks the ethical dilemma of his life- of slavery, education, and identity, creating a piece masterfully interwoven with logos, pathos and ethos. It is the combination of the three which makes his work so effective. Throughout his memoir, Douglass explains the social norms within slave culture, and the laws he had to follow. He is specific when explaining events, and consistently presents the logic behind them. For example, when describing the master-slave relationship, Douglass states "The whisper that my master was my father, may or may not be true; and, true or false, it is of but little consequence to my purpose whilst the fact remains, in all its glaring odiousness, that slaveholders have ordained, and by law established, that the children of slave women shall in all cases follow the condition of their mothers; and this is done too obviously to administer to their own lusts, and make a gratification of their wicked desires profitable as well as pleasurable; for by this cunning arrangement, the slaveholder, in cases not a few, sustains to his slave the double relation of master and father” (49).     Slavery, the dark beast that consumes, devours, and pillages the souls of those who are forced to within its bounds and those who think they are the powerful controllers of this filth they call business. This act is the pinnacle of human ignorance, they use it as the building blocks for their “trade,” and treat these people no more than replaceable property that can be bought, sold, and beaten on a whim. The narrative of Frederick Douglass is a tale about a boy who is coming of age in a world that does not accept him for who he is and it is also told as a horror that depicts what we can only imagine as the tragedies placed on these people in these institutions of slavery. It is understood as a chronicle of his life telling us his story from childhood to manhood and all that is in between, whilst all this is going on he vividly mixes pathological appeals to make us feel for him and all his brethren that share his burden. His narrative is a map from slavery to freedom where he, in the beginning, was a slave of both body and mind. But as the story progresses we see his transformation to becoming a free man both of the law and of the mind. He focuses on emotion and the building up of his character to show us what he over time has become. This primarily serves to make the reader want to follow his cause all the more because of his elegant and intelligent style of mixing appeals. Through his effective use of anecdotes and vivid imagery he shows us his different epiphanies over time, and creates appeals to his character by showing us how he as a person has matured, and his reader’s emotion giving us the ability to feel for his situation in a more real sense. This helps argue that the institution of slavery is a parasitic bug that infects the slave holder with a false sense of power and weakens the slave in both body and spirit.…

    Frederick Bailey, later changing his name to Frederick Douglass, was born in to slavery around 1817. Due to the fact slaves were not allowed to know the date of their birth, we are unsure about the year. Douglass was the result of the raping of a slave by her master. This was a common practice and actually profited slave owners by creating more slaves at no cost. However, mixed slaves received harsher treatment by slave owners’ wives because they were disgusted by their existence and ensured their constant suffrage if they were not sold off. All slaves were constantly beaten, received little food, few articles of clothing, and no bed. From his birth, Douglass was owned by Captain Anthony until the age of seven when he was given to Anthony’s son-in-law’s brother, Hugh Auld in Baltimore. Douglass receives a much better life under the control of Auld. Auld’s wife even begins to teach Douglass to read until she is stopped by her husband who fears Douglass will become unmanageable if he receives and education. Douglass manages to continue his education and finishes learning to read with the help of local boys. It is under the control of Auld that Douglass becomes conscious to the evils of slavery and the existence of the abolitionist movement vows to one day escape. Douglass is given to Thomas Auld, Hugh Auld’s brother and Captain Anthony’s son-in-law, who finds Douglass unmanageable and rents him to Edward Covey for one year in order to “break” Douglass. Covey is an unbelievably cruel man and after six months, Douglass’s spirit is broken. Douglass becomes indifferent and forgets his dream of escaping until one day when Douglass stands up for himself and fights Covey. After the fight, Covey never touched Douglass again and Douglass’ will to escape is renewed. After his year with Covey, Douglass is rented to William Freeland for two years.
