A lot of valuable information is given to the reader throughout the book Ultimate Deer Food Plots by Ed Spinazzola. Personally, I’ve been able to take everything presented in the text relatively easily with the help of my prior knowledge. All of the advice in this book is relative to my life every year. If I had to choose however, the points that have stuck with me the most are: the importance of correcting soil as well as past vs. present land management layouts. Both of these topics are so important when trying to create great hunting land. Starting with soil correction, I have always known how critical it is to have good soil (based off of my own food plot results). My dad and I’s first food plots didn’t turn out great, as expected. Barely…

I bought two pounds of Alaskan King Salmon today. To me, the most exciting thing about cooking salmon has to be making sure in getting the skin nice and crispy. Score, salt, pepper, cajun spice, oil….skin side down, a touch of butter. And that!...keeps the salmon so moist! One of my most favorite things to cook is a great succotash with fish. Just mindblowing! Start by caramelizing onions in the pan, add corn, red peppers, yellow peppers, green peppers, zucchinis, and squash. The salmon is resting.…

Remember that nice juicy steak you had for dinner last night, well chances are that, that steak contained antibiotics that are the cause of many of the superbugs in the news lately. There is a lot of controversy around the use of antibiotics in livestock and the risks or benefits of using it, but for the most part the risks outweigh the benefits. Our large corporate ranch in northwestern Montana should not use antibiotics in our feed because most of it wouldn’t help the livestock anyway, antibiotics are already over used, and there is a growing market for antibiotic free meat.…

When I was younger, I compared my grandfather to that of an elephant, 13 feet tall, 15,400 pounds, and a heart weighing up to 46 pounds. A big, broad, vulnerable creature, towering over the rest of the family. Ten months of hairy cell leukemia, a rare strand of the already rare strand of chronic lymphotic leukemia claiming his body made him so small, just skin and bones. My best friend sat 205 miles away over Skype and asked: “How do you get rid of an elephant in a room?” I imagined an elephant squeezing itself like a balloon into my nine-foot-tall living room. “You have to eat it,” she said, “Do you know how eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”…

We pointed the gun, and bam, my first deer was down, this was when I knew that this place was going to be a special place to me. Growing up, going to deer camp with my daddy was always a very exciting thing for me. Hopewell was practically where I grew up; the dusty dirt roads, beautiful and quiet backwoods, deep mud holes, wild animals, friends and family made that place a home for me. Most people wouldn’t really consider their deer camp as their safe place and I guess that’s what makes me different from others.…
