Narrative Essay On Concussions
I am independant and very stubborn. This past winter during basketball season I received a concussion one day during practice. Concussions are way more difficult to cope with than most people think. I knew the people who loved me did, and that they would always be there for me. However, before my concussion I never truly had to rely on them. I love my friends and family to death but I am very independant. I hardly ever want help with anything because I want to do it all by myself and I am really stubborn, these arent always the best characteristics to have but it’s part of my package. Before my injury, I was the one who helped other people with their problems and I never really told people about my problems, so I just stuffed it down and acted like everything was fine. I was able to get by, barely, until December 15, 2016 …show more content…
Now, I realize that I was depressed before the season started and then when I was injured, my mental health plummeted. I just told everyone, “I’m fine!”, “I’ll get better eventually!”, “It’s not my plans, it’s God’s”. While I knew these to be true I couldn’t help but feel depressed. I didn’t feel like rehabbing because I felt like it wasn’t doing anything and simple things were so hard. That’s the thing with concussions is that concentrating on anything for longer than about 30 sec either gave me a headache or made me want to throw up. I couldn’t ride in the car and look out the window because I would feel nauseous. Concussions are hard to fully understand unless you’ve been there. I quickly reached the breaking point where I just had a full blown meltdown. I’d never had a meltdown like this before. I still hadn’t gotten the message yet though. I continued to silently struggle for the next 2 months as I rehabbed. My family had started to noticed how depressed I had gotten and I started

I was cleared to play basketball a few days before the football season was over by my physical therapist, Matt. I rushed home that day packed my sneakers and a ball and went to the gym. The ball felt so natural and nice in my hands, the squeaking of my shoes was so pleasant to my ear, and the swish of the net was a almost heavenly euphoria. I started hanging out with a lot of people again, my grades were back to normal, and I was expecting my goal to of starting to be finally accomplished. My problems were almost erased as it seemed everything was…

I have very few memories of the day that I obtained my first concussion in the spring of my sophomore year at Tulane. I was feeling stressed that day, I had an Organic Chemistry quiz the next morning and was squeezing in study time between classes and diving practice. At practice, thoughts of Organic Chemistry were distracting me from my work out; I remember leaving the board, and then seeming to reappear on the pool deck with my coach barking at me in a language I did not understand. I just stared at him, too perplexed and confused to speak a word. I did not know it then, but the concussion diagnosis marked the beginning of a long journey into the inner workings of medicine from the other side, that of a patient. What I discovered would amuse,…

I made my own decision that I would continue to play football, after I got done with recovery. Probably asking in your mind,”Well why do you have to go to rehab?’’ Good question, It was my first game back from my first mishap, where I dislocated my shoulder. I had been playing a little that night, but not a whole lot because it was my first game back and I didn't know much about the position I was playing. It was kickoff, and I was on the very end of the field, in my position ready to make the tackle, bound and determined i was gonna make it. I made the tackle, but it didn't go the way i had planned it to go. Instead of making the tackle and standing up and cheering with the team, I made the tackle and laid on the ground in so much pain i thought…

Sports get physical no matter if it is contract or not, one of the major problems with getting tossed around is head trauma. Concussions happen when someone sustains a hard hit to the head and gets their “bell rung”. This is where the brain hits against the skull damaging part of it. This is a very serious injury that cannot be taken lightly because if not properly treated it can have ill effects down the road that can lead to more serious problems. In high school sports it's all about winning and some players and coaches lose sight of the safety aspect in sports. Two years ago, a soccer ball was blasted into the side of my head and knocked me to the ground. It left me with a concussion that not only took me out of soccer for six months, but also affected my day to day life. For months, it made me nauseous to even jog around the block or walk down a crowded hallway. I was in physical therapy, vision therapy and on a special learning plan at school. Even though the blow to my head could have altered my life completely, I pleaded with my parents to let me continue my soccer career. It took two more minor concussions to make me realize it was not safe for me to play anymore. Looking back on my time playing soccer, I question why I kept playing. Why did I put the sport and my team ahead of my own health?…

Hey everyone! I hope you all have been enjoying your rotations so far. It sounds like some of us have been a lot busier than others this week. I’ve really been enjoying my rotation thus far, my preceptor and his assistant are hilarious, and so it has made this transition a lot easier for me. My mornings begin at 7 with treatments, and then I usually get a break and come back around 1 for afternoon treatments and to cover football practice. On average we see around 40-50 athletes per day ranging from minor overuse injuries to traumatic acute injuries. Surprisingly there have been a lot of concussed athletes this week so I’m becoming quite familiar with the concussion protocol and IMPACT testing. I probably saw one of the worst cases throughout my years of being an ATS on Friday night during the football game.…

Concussions are a big topic in sports today more than what they were a few years ago. Many athletes suffer from concussions do to helmet to helmet contact or from extremely hard hits. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions and may result in temporary unconsciousness. I agree that an athlete should be pulled temporarily from any game or sports activities if they suffer from a concussion if they are younger than eighteen. But if they are eighteen or older they have the right to put their selves back out there since they are considered adults.…

What do you think when you hear the word “concussion”? I’m sure you think, like most people do, about a football player getting a head injury in the game. That’s what I used to think about concussions, until I got one, and trust me it was not from a football game. I just finished up my first semester as a freshman at Kutztown University and I was home for winter break. I was in the car with my best friend pulling up to an intersection at a red light. It was three days after Christmas, so it was already dark outside around 5:30 P.M. We waited for the light to change green, I looked both ways like they taught in the Driver’s Manual before I proceeded to cross the intersection. And there it was, a car speeding through a red light and hitting…

I have a reputation of always getting hurt, no matter what. During soccer practice, my teammates and I played against each other because it was part of our practice. While we were playing, I had the ball and one of the players from the other team was trying to take the ball away from me. When this was happening, she stepped on my foot in between the skin and the nail with her cleats. Even though I was injured, I kept playing, but I didn’t realize that if I continued to play, it would make my injury worse. As I continued to play, I kicked a high ball,…
