Narrative Essay About Moving To America
Across the Caribbean Sea

I grew up on a beautiful tropical island, but I have always wondered what would it be like to live in the United States of America. They say that everything is possible in America. Like everyone else, I wanted more opportunities and expand my horizon. I knew there were a few challenges, but I did not know or foreseen the magnitude. Moving to another country might be exciting; it can also be a positive experience. Wanting to improve one’s quality of life is something everyone wants, but when you move to another country in order to accomplish that, you will also experience major life changing consequences along the way. During my last year of undergraduate studies, at the University of Puerto Rico, I stepped into a Spanish literature class. I was not acquiring the knowledge I was expecting; therefore I decided to switch to another section. As a planned, I learned more about literature, but for my surprise, I also met my future husband. He was an Air Force ROTC’s cadet, and when the time came, he graduated from college and commissioned as an Air Force officer. Ten months after his commission, we got married and I had to say goodbye to my family, friends, and home island. The first consequence I experienced when moving to America was the language barrier. One of many positive outcomes of coming to America has been the opportunity to visit and explore new places. I have lived in Texas, Louisiana, the Mojave Desert in California, North Dakota, and Kansas. I’m the first, and maybe I will be the only, member of my family who have traveled the most and who have lived in so many different places. I love the fact that I have been able to learn about other cultures, enjoy so many different kinds of food and meet wonderful people from other countries, not just American. These experiences would have never been possible if I did not come here in the first

"Hurry up! The plane leaves in two hours," my mom reminded me as I swiftly, yet reluctantly continued to stuff more and more belongings into the tiny taxi. Waving good-bye to family members and friends, who I had spent my whole life with, was an exceptionally uncomfortable and difficult task. On the way to the airport as my mom tried to comfort me, she constantly reminded me, "Life will be no different in the Dominican Republic than in the USA." However, this proved to be false as soon as I stepped off that plane. Not understanding a single word being said around me, I realized I would have to adapt to a new culture, but at the same time carry on my own.…

Everyone has their own story, each one as unique as the next. Every day we encounter different people who have different experiences and different views of the world. Some, however, are closer to our stories than others. And when we meet someone extremely different from us, we tend to respond by finding the similarities in ourselves and them. Growing up with a dad in the military, and even after he left it, I lived in many different places. In every place the people were different. Every time we moved, I found myself attempting to learn how to fit in with this new group of people. This has made it easier for me to become friends with people I share almost nothing in common with. During my time living in Pennsylvania, my best friend was a girl…

Upon my arrival to the US, my perspective has shifted and the reality became more obvious. Knowing the country's values and ideals increases your sense of knowledge. Every year a large amount of children and women take on the challenge of traveling to the United States, some legally, some illegally. In doing so, they had created a unique country that today holds together and unites many people from many different regions of Earth. As many say, America is really just one giant “melting pot.” The reason that statement exists however is because of the way this country was established - with ideas in mind that benefit the citizens. These ideas have existed throughout the centuries enticing more and more people to come and experience what is known as “The American Experience.” This so-called “experience” is the direct answer to the common question, “What is America?”. People come to America for a new start, a new life, and potentially great success. The…
