Most people rely on the security and care of others to provide for their loved ones when they put them in a nursing home. What they don’t realize is how much neglect goes on to the people they care most about. Residents are at risk of being abused by their caretakers but they are also at risk of being restrained, which may lead to a form of abuse. At Southwestern Nursing Home I have witnessed forms of neglect and abuse. Nursing homes are meant to be a place for security for the elderly to be cared for in their golden years, and it has become an unpleasant experience for senior citizens being subjected to acts of abuse and neglect.…
What if everything you knew and were used to, such as friends, family and way of life, suddenly changed? This happened to me when my family moved to Puerto Rico for the first time. All the things I was used to in my hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, all the people I knew suddenly changed overnight. At first I didn’t think it was going to be that different. But I soon found out that there were so many differences, big and small.…
So my last weekend before being deployed has finally arrived. I wanted to do something exciting, extreme - something I never would have imagined doing before – something that would take a lot of heart to do. Maybe even could be called a little crazy as others told me. Skydiving was something I had never done and certainly had never thought of doing until now.…
The morning was young and the barn was alive. Horses were neighing, dogs were barking, the goat was bleating, and cats appeared out of every nook and cranny that you could see. All were awaiting their morning meals. I grew up on a small farm in Pennsylvania. During the fourteen years of living in Pennsylvania, my experiences have taught me many important life skills and morals that will forever guide my life.…
It was a hot, sticky day in New York city when we were headed to Coney Island to enjoy the beach. My friends Michaela, Taylor, Karlie and I were ecstatic everywhere we went; this being our first trip to New York. We arrived at Coney Island and immediately hustled to the beach like a swarm of bees. The water was nice and cool and there were seashells everywhere which we scavenged for to bring home. Swimming in the ocean was such a surreal feeling that engulfed all of us until we were too exhausted to continue. We decided to browse the shops on the pier for some keep-sakes or souvenirs to take home to our families and friends. After what seemed like hours we had gathered up all of the must-have trinkets and clothing and were headed back to our area to return to our hotel when we saw a little stand with mini cages on it. Curious, we made our way over to discover dozens of baby turtles, each in their own separate cage. Watching them with excitement, we decided to buy two of them and take them back to South Dakota with us, not thinking about the travel the little turtles would have to endure.…
Graduation day is something many people will never forget. One of my biggest moments in my life was the day of graduation and the weeks leading up to it. It was one of the most exciting but nerve-racking moments in my high school years. Hearing my name being called to receive my diploma made things so surreal. I realized I was walking toward a new beginning in life and at that moment I realized how fast time had past. I was no longer a child anymore.…
Once you grow up you realize how insignificant a mortifying situation can make you feel. It feels almost like it’s the end of the world. On a hot summer Friday afternoon a middle school group traveled in a white passenger van down a long country road to a youth conference. I was a young girl who had no idea how the next 30 minutes would transpire into the most embarrassing time of my life.…
Can you think of a time when you were feeling down and everyone else is having a good time? The best think you can do is cheer someone else up. That sometimes makes me feel better. Not to long ago I wasn't cheerful around my friends. I was just having a bad day. Neither was my friend Mark. We both were on the same team for badminton in gym. Our other good friend Wade was cheating on us. So that was making Mark mad. I had to cheer Mark up to cheer myself up. Mark was mad as a bee gets when humans come near their nest. My main points are that Wade was cheating and upsetting me and Mark. Wade then cheered me up with a dollar for a drink. Then Mark and Wade made me choose who is a better friend.…

Has the question, “ What do other people think of me?” ever crossed your mind before? It has crossed my mind before, which has led me to many questions. In this day and age people know how to handle a computer, I’d like to say I know more than your average bear. Many things are possible with a computer, like watching videos or listening to live streams. Every week or so a group of my friends speak about random topics, this particular week the gang decided to speak about religion. A topic I consider slightly taboo to discuss in large groups, a day I will never forget.…
It is Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 1:00 am. I am watching a movie in the basement with Matt. My sister is fast asleep in her bed. My mom is looking over her mother, sleeping by her side. My dad is watching another show on The History Channel. The phone rings. My heart stops. Who could be calling at this time of night? What is wrong? Are Grandpap and Meemaw okay? Should I get the phone? Do I want to know? Moments later my father answers the phone. I wonder who called. I need to find out. I hesitantly go up the creaking staircase trying to reassure myself that my worst nightmare is not coming true. I must be overreacting. Obviously everyone is fine. There is nothing to worry about. As I reach the top of the steps, I take a deep breath and hope for the best. I go through the door. My eyes are frantically searching for my dad. I find him in his room. I ask him, “What happened? Who called?” A tear is streaming down his face as he slowly states, “Grandpap died.” While in a sweet, strong embrace, my father and I begin to weep tears of sorrow. The hole in my heart at the time inflicts sharp pains of grief and emptiness that will never be filled.…
Murder is the unlawful killing of another human being with malice afterthought, and generally this state of mind distinguishes murder from other forms of unlawful homicide (such as manslaughter). As the loss of a human being inflicts enormous grief upon the individuals close to the victim, as well as the fact that the commission of a murder is highly detrimental to the good order within society, most societies both present and in antiquity have considered it a most serious crime worthy of the harshest of punishment. In most countries, a person convicted of murder is typically given a long prison sentence, possibly a life sentence where permitted, and in some countries, the death penalty may be imposed for such an act though this practice is becoming rarer. A person who commits murder is called a murderer. Now, my question is, “Is death by assistance different than murder?” In my opinion, no. Administering a drug to help bring on death to a terminally ill human being, is no different than using a single shot from a gun to end their life. That is with the only gross difference being that it is less messy. It is not humane or professional for doctors to convince us to commit drug induced suicide regardless of the state of health without family consent. It is, however, human nature to allow time and whatever or whoever each individual person believes in of higher strength, to take over and determine a person lasts breath.…
Since I had started school and writing composition, I have had experiences that either was good or bad. But at the end these experience helped me through my next and future years of school and college. One of the incidents that most marked my writing experience was in sophomore year. The prompt was doing a resume for college, and I actually did or tried my best, but then again the result wasn't so good. The resume was almost completely marked by red writings, of my grammar. All though the professor gave us many opportunities to make it right, every time I got it back it seems as if nothing had change. And it was then that I realized I haven't had done some things right. I learned two things not to stress and always have my ideas on the same topic.…
After the long vigorous hours of hard practice, game day arrives. The coaches and girls have been waiting on tonight for numerous amounts of days. The smell of diesel fuel fills the air as the fierce competitors exit the yellow painted bus, after a long, time consuming ride. The players enter the gym in a parade like fashion as the loud roars of supporters fill the stands. While the hype increases, the players gear up for war. The torn knee pads slide on to protect the player’s boney knees as they compete to win. Laces of the black and white striped tennis shoes tie to perfection. With great pride, the joyful teammates rush out of the hairspray infused locker room with their number labeled jerseys ready for battle. Fidgeting around on the freshly buffed court, the girls anxiously await the sound of the referee’s obnoxious whistle. As the whistle blows, the Wildcats and Pirates fight viciously to win the first volleyball game of the season.…
As I was calmly sauntering around my house I heard a crash. Then I rushed throughh my living room, to see what it was. I slowly opened the door and come to find out it was a spaceship that crashed in my front yard. Not believing my eyes thinking this all was a dream I just closed the front door and whispered" This is just a dream" I opened the door again and realized this wasn't a dream, it really was a spaceship in my front yard. From that moment I knew it was going to be a confusing day.…
