A narrative essay is about storytelling for a narrative story to work it must capture and hold the audience attention you must give a clear understanding of your story. A descriptive essay lets you describe in detail what the essay is all about using words that appeal to your sense of smell, hearing, see, touch, and taste. A descriptive essay lets you use words that describes a person, place, or object. When I compare the author’s narrative essay “Are the Rich Happy?” by Steven Leacock and the author’s descriptive essay “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou it is clear that there are many similarities and differences between the two styles of writings. The narrative style of writing is more powerful because it tells a clear story and it captures the audience attention.
Descriptive writing is different from narrative writing because it uses vivid language. The descriptive essay I used for my comparison is “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou. ”As I ate she begin the first of what we later called “my lessons in living she said that I must always be intolerant of illiteracy.” “That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated an even more intelligent than college professors.” “She encouraged me to listen carefully to what country people called mother wit.” “That is those homely saying was couched the collective of wisdom of generation.”(grammar.about.com) the narrative essay I chose is “Are the Rich Happy” by Steven Leacock. The narrative essay is different from a descriptive essay because your sense such as smell, touch, sight, hearing. “According to the rich peoples own accounts they had a hard time keeping up with the rich some had $10,000 or $50,000 by all account could not keep up with the rich.”(gam.about.com) “Mr. Spugg says that he was much happier when he had only the plain, simple things

Many think that narrative and descriptive styles of writing are one in the same, but they are not. Although they complement each other for a complete story; you can successfully write using one style without the other. The authors Connell, C.M. & Sole, K. define narrative writing as, "Narration is storytelling from the perspective of a narrator, and the story may be true, false, imaginary, or a combination." (2013, chapter 6.3). When you tell a story you want your readers to experience it through your words as if they were there when it happened. Connell, C.M. & Sole, K. define descriptive writing as, "Description is a pattern of writing that can be defined as painting pictures with words." (2013, chapter 6.4). A descriptive story leaves no detail unrevealed and appeals to all of your senses. When comparing Maya Angelou's descriptive poem "Caged Bird" and Judy Brady's narrative essay "I Want a Wife", it is clear that there many similarities and differences between the two styles of writing. However, because Maya Angelou's poem has descriptive language that appeals to your five senses, specific detail descriptions and uses figurative language to compare the unfamiliar with something more familiar it makes it a superior piece of literature.…

The author has an objective to create a vivid portrait of an object so that the audience can have a clear image of the thing being described. The purpose of a descriptive essay is to describe a person, place, or thing in much detail. The author’s purpose is to recreate their experience in a way in which the reader can visualize the actual event. An essayist and poet known for writing these types of descriptive essays is Annie Dillard. Her essays consist of various types of imagery, which applies to all the senses, like sight, sounds, smell etc. These words aid the reader in visualizing and experiencing what the author is describing about.
