Napoleon is an effective leader In Animal Farm, by George Orwell, George tells the story the only farm in England run by animals. The leader of Animal farm is Napoleon, which through the entire book Napoleon has proven to be a effective leader. Throughout the book Napoleon has been able to manipulate the animals into getting whatever he wants without any disagreements. Napoleon does this by using Squealer and the animals ignorance to remove any doubt against his actions. When Napoleon breaks any of the seven commandments, written on the barn, he has Squealer change the commandments. The animals are to ignorant to see that they have been changed, so Napoleon takes advantage of this. Napoleon also sends Squealer to each animal to talk them out of any suspicions. Napoleon also uses Snowball, who was driven off the farm, as a scapegoat for all of the problems on the farm. “That evening Squealer explained privately to the other animals that Napoleon had never in reality... incubator shed had actually been stolen from among Napoleon's papers.” (57) In this statement by Squealer, they make it sound like Napoleon is the great idea pig that came up with the idea to build the windmill. This statement also gave a reason for Napoleon ordering the dogs to chase Snowball off the farm. Napoleon also showed his effectiveness in his ability to eliminate any threats against him. “In a moment the dogs came bounding back. At first no one had been able... wagged their tails to him in the same way as the other dogs had been used to do to Mr. Jones.” (53) This line is after Napoleons guard dogs have chased Snowball off the farm. This shows that Napoleon was able to create a pack of loyal servants that he then used to eliminate an opponent that would stop him from becoming the only leader. “They were all slain on the spot. And so the tale of confessions and executions went on... smell of blood, which had been unknown there since the expulsion of Jones.” (84) In this line Napoleon shows his ability to eliminate all traitors. Napoleon uses the dogs to remove all of the animals that tried to make the farm fail and remove loyal animals. Napoleon removes the traitors to make sure there are no threats to his leadership or any animals to start making the others disloyal. Napoleons lying ability also makes him an effective leader. When it is time to build the Windmill Napoleon tells the animals that it will be used to generate electricity to warm the animals and make their work less stressing. Telling the animals this will make them work harder. “The windmill, however, had not after all been used for generating electrical power. It was used for milling corn, and brought in a handsome money profit.” (129). In this line George tells the reader what the windmill was actually used for. This proves to the reader that Napoleon had lied to the animals. Even though he lied to the animals, he was effective at getting the animals to work harder. The animals may be over worked and being treated unfairly, but that does not mean Napoleon is an ineffective leader. Napoleon throughout the entire book was an unfair leader, but he was effective. Napoleon was able to get the animals to work hard, and for a long time, make them feel like they were living a fair life. “The animals were weeding the turnip field. They worked diligently, hardly raising their faces from the ground, and not knowing whether to be more frightened of the pigs or of the human visitors.” (135) This line shows that Napoleon was effective as a leader because he was able to get the animals to work diligently on the farm. They may be scared of Napoleon and the pigs, but that does not mean he is an ineffective leader. Napoleon has proven to be an effective leader throughout the entire book. Napoleons manipulation and lying ability, along with his ability to remove enemies are the three most important features that make Napoleon an effective leader. Napoleon was effective in getting the farm running successfully, like it was in the time of Mr. Jones if not better.
