Nannocellulose Nanotechnology Case Study
Nanocellulose Nanotechnology is a promising area that greatly contributes to a sustainable utilization in various training, research and developmental applications (Salah, 2013). However, there are few challenges that has to be overcome to promote its multifunction in various industrial application (Salajkova et al., 2013). The challenges are such as:
i. The homogeneous dispersion of the nanomaterial in a small scale. ii. Development of low cost materials.
Over the years, nanocellulose has been widely used in the application of nanocomposites (Islam et al., 2013). It serves as a cost effective and sustainable reinforcement in the composite industry (Synder et al., 2013). From the previously conducted researches, nanocomposites was found to exhibit remarkable properties that is able to improve the mechanical as well as barrier properties of biopolymers. The higher performance of nanocomposites is achieved by the utilization of nanocellulose as a reinforcing agent in its preparation (Ansari et al., 2012). This ability is due to the rigid network of the structure with the presence of hydrogen bonds which prevents the entry of foreign molecules. Based on the journal published by Nair et al., (2014), nanocellulose serves as adequate barrier against microorganisms, water vapour and grease in the covering of food and drinks, healthcare and cosmetics products. This property of nanocellulose avoids physical, biochemical as well as microbiological dilapidation of consumer products. Nanocellulose is also used in the paper based packaging where it is used to replace the unsustainable layers of wax, plastics or aluminium and the commercially used cellophane that has the tendency to release by-products and uses reagents that might impose harm to the surrounding
