My Thrust into Motherhood

I have always wondered what kind of mother I would make. What it is to be a mom? Something I never planned nor expected. I am 38 years old and was sure my days to become a mom were dwindling away. November of 2011 changed everything. This is the year my life changed drastically. I met my soul mate and along tow came two beautiful children.

Theresa Brice Wheeler, then just a budding 13 year old, is the oldest. She has all the looks of her mother but an attitude that is all her own! She is a typical teenage girl, always on her phone texting, talking and surfing the internet. Then we have Cameron Dean Wheeler, the youngest at 11 years of age. Cameron is quite a character, always telling jokes making everyone laugh. Unlike his sister he would rather stay outside to play with his friends rather than stay inside and play with technology. Our crazy relationship became serious and we quickly decided to bridge the distance between us. We made our family official last April. I left my home in San Angelo, Texas to be with them here in Conroe. Although, I was sure of us and sure of what I wanted, I was terrified at the prospect of becoming a “step” mom! I asked myself if I was ready for this? Would they like me?

Like all families that have been merged together, we had and have our differences. I am a neat and tidy “clean freak” and they are walking tornadoes. I appreciate the peace and quiet, and they appreciate noise and chaos. We have disagreed about their chores, clothes, and grades. Placing my expectations solely on what I have experienced with my nieces and nephews. I expected far worse than what I actually encountered, mothering two new teens. My previous experience ensured me I would face disrespect and teen angst. I am delighted to say that they are great kids, and being a mother to them is a blessing.

As we grow up, we go through a series of experiences; some good and other bad. Some of us have had the experience of riding a bike, going out of the country, or maybe just graduating from high school. I don't share much about my breastfeeding journey on social media but lately I've been struggling with the fact. I've been mentally and physically exhausted with it. I, on a daily basis wonder what I could of done differently or compare my experience to others. Which I know I should never do. What works for one child most likely isn't the same for the next. I hear a lot " when do you plan to stop?", "oh you're still breastfeeding" , or get strange looks when I pull my cover out to nurse my toddler.…

With every factor that keeps a stepfamily distant, what causes the closure and allows acceptance for a new individual. There are “seven stages of stepparent development: (1) fantasy; (2) assimilation; (3) awareness; (4) mobilization; (5) action; (6) contact; cand, (7) resolution” (Patricia 357). As stepfamily goes through these seven stages, they grow closer and start acting like a legitimate family and every family goes through this cycle, the only difference is how fast they are able to complete all seven stages. “In the initial interview study, the two ‘fast’ families completed the entire stepfamily cycle in about four years, four ‘average families’ took about seven years. Three ‘slower’ families remained stuck in the early stages after 5, 8, and 12 years” (Patricia 357). These steps, take a while to take place and it isn’t a solution that happens overnight. The process to becoming a fully functioning family takes years to develop and an abundance of patience. In Who Narrows the Step Gap?, the authors took a series of samples and tests. They found in model 5 “that strength of filial obligations tended to narrow the step gap, thereby pointing to the importance of family related attitudes and values, although the causal direction of this effect is not entirely clear” (Becker, Salzburger, Lous, & Nauck 1143). Filial obligations, or acting as a family, amongst the step child and parent closed the gap. The gap is closed once the acceptance for the new member begins and he or or she is seen as family rather than a stranger. However “stepparents may have to negotiate their position within the family unit without the help of well-established cultural scripts” (Shapiro 98). In the beginning to adjust to this new relationship, the stepparent may have to ask what the boundaries are and what they are supposed to do and until those boundaries are uplifted no…

With every family, the impacts of children on a relationship are different. People expect different changes, while other changes are not so expected. My friends, Brad and Morgan, have been married for almost three years. When I asked them what changes they experienced that was least expected they had different answers. Brad told me that his least expected change was that he “went from being someone who has never been around too many children, and not really a ‘kid’ person, to loving and playing with a child and it making you feel so good just to make them smile, and the warmth in your heart when they look at you with their arms open saying ‘Da Da’ (B. Worley, personal communication, January 9, 2012).” Morgan said that her least expected change was that she became a lot more emotional than she was before (personal communication, January 9, 2012). When talking about this, she told me about an experience that she had that made her realize this. She related “I went to a graduation ceremony shortly after my son was born and I cried thinking about HIS graduation!…

Stepfamilies will face unique factors such as negotiating parenting roles between biological parents and stepparents. The relationship between stepparents and stepchildren can strain the quality of stepfamily couples. The dynamics of the cohabitating stepfamily may mimic married stepfamilies in the way in which family roles are assumed and in the financial and emotional contributions that are made to the other partners children. Thus cohabitating may face some of the challenges faced by married stepfamilies (Stepfamilies in the United States: A Fact Sheet, 2009).…

Because the uniformity of all people creates stability, the brave new world seems to be perfect. No one needs to live in a state of desire as they should always be able to fulfill their wishes. If they cannot have that satisfaction, they risk feeling disappointed or sad. A horrible fate in this world is to live through periods of desire and fulfillment (Diken 155). The people in this world must maintain feelings of happiness at all times. However, humans are supposed to make the best of the worst situations (Huxley 236).
