My Relationship With Reading And Writing
Tracing back on my relationship with reading, writing, and learning has two values: first, pick up on mistakes made and learn from them and the other is to see what progress was made. This creates a very significant impact on my current and future self making sure I don't make the same mistakes as my past self while boosting my confidence. For example, back in my freshman year in high school I used to only skim through passages when writing an informative essay and end up misinterpreting what I read at times therefore leads my writing to be misinforming. Looking back I have made this mistake multiple times as a result I changed the way I read in order to be able to grasp the full picture to do I read the full passage plus do some small

Joseph Harris’ essay “Revising” (2006 pg.452-69); serves as a guide in how to correctly revise any writing you have ever completed. Harris designates four points that must be taken under consideration while revising. Before getting to the core of his argument, Harris notes that revising is not the same as editing. The essay points out that students are trained too just polish and make their writing sleeker rather than making a difference or significant change to the original. From there Harris brings up his first point stating that the author must decide what exactly it is that they are trying to convey. Harris believes the problem stems from that fact that many writers focus too much on correcting mistakes without thinking of what it is they…

After I finish a writing assignment and receive my graded version back, I learn what I could improve on. When just reading a paper in your head can spot errors, when you actually read something out loud word for word more mistakes can sometimes be found. When reading something out loud spelling mistakes might not be as obvious, but the general flow and specific word choices can be made clear on whether they are correct or incorrect. I had my dad peer review my presentation and discussion on the review of John F. Kennedy's City Upon a Hill Speech. He pointed out some mistakes, but didn't point them all out. I went back through the entire assignment and found more of the mistakes my dad had told me about.…

In the newsletter, ‘Getting our future back on the rails- slowly’, that was received by households in the local area; the writer emphasizes the need for change and promotes the idea of sustainable living through community action. The direct, persistent tone serves to assert the notion that the community would greatly benefit by a shared garden. The proposal contains 3 images of which all support the writer’s philosophy. Commonly, all are directed to the reader through techniques of fear tactics and consistent use of hyperbole. The newsletter aims to persuade readers through tactics of: appealing to sense of security, use of evidence and involvement of readers through inclusive language.…

Last year in 6th I had a teacher who taught literacy. She impacted me when I had her. She made me love literacy more than I use to. I learned more about commas, exclamation, and stuff like that. Since I knew what to do, I could probably eventually publish one of my stories. She also had made me motivated to make more stories. I had not made stories like I thought I was when I was in 5th grade. I did not feel motivated like I was in 5th grade. And I used to love making these stories. I did not feel motivated anymore like I use to. I would usually get compliments for making my stories and that motivated me, but I did not have anyone to help me so I did not feel motivated. Until I made my first story that year. I gave it to a lot of people,…

The first books I ever started reading were Winnie the Pooh and Dr Suess books. When I was young my parents were really good about getting me started with reading different books and for a long time I loved reading, as long as it was books I got to choose and enjoyed reading myself. Once I got further along in school and they started mandating what books we had to read I got to the point where I didn’t find reading enjoyable any longer. I didn’t like most of the books my teachers were picking for us to read so I felt like I had to force myself to read them and it caused me to even stop reading books outside of school…

When you hear the word literacy what comes to mind? Do you think of words or school or horrible comprehension tests? When I hear the word literacy none of the above is what comes to my mind. I think of when I was young, no more than five, and I would sit on my grandmother’s warm lap wrapped up in her arms that seemed to protect me from any and everything while she read to me. I think of the struggle and the many trials it took to spell and write my own name, but also relishing in the sense of accomplishment I felt. I think of the times I read along to books my mother would read to my sisters and me until I could read them on my own. Finally, I think of the smiles and proud looks on my parents’ and grandparents’ faces when ever I would show…

    My Literacy Journey

Growing up in a bilingual household has affected my literacy journey. It affected my Spanish writing because I focused more on English. This course has helped me look at English literacy beyond the point of it being another credit to simply cross off my list. A specific reading from this course that I was able to really retain and relate to was Victor Villanueva's excerpt from Bootstraps: From an Academic of Color. Here he brought up several points that made me think differently about literacy and how it can affect my life now or even after college. “One professor said my writing was too formulaic. One professor said it was to novel. Another wrote: ‘nonsense.’ “ (Villanueva 112) I really like this quote because relating it back to literacy and my college experience ahead of me, it makes me understand that there will be times…

Writing has not always been a strong suit of mine. Even in the present moment I sometimes struggle with writing. I have done numerous papers, ranging from daily journals to argumentative essays. I will admit that the older I grew I realized that writing helps in many ways. It can be a form of stress relieving, which I sometimes take into consideration when I have sort of a lot going on mentally. Many writing assignments were about what I liked to do hobby-wise, what my plans were for the future career/ school-wise, how I felt about certain discussed subjects nationwide such as the election of a black president, the rights for gay marriage, as well as oversea discussions, like the human trafficking in Thailand.…
