My “Profession” Paper
While I was in high school, I pondered about several different majors and careers I wanted to do in college. It was a very long, vigorous process deciding what I wanted to be the rest of my life until I came upon the perfusion program. This is a medical profession where they work in the hospitals during surgeries. Most of them can be on-call which means if you’re not working and there is an emergency you can be called in. The perfusion program is a four year program with your last year being all clinical.
A perfusionist’s job may sound simple; they run a machine while in surgery. It is a lot more complicated though because if you make one mistake you could potentially kill the patient. The perfusionist’s main duty is to run the heart/lung machine during surgery depending on what kind of surgery it is. The machine pumps the blood throughout the patient’s body and keeps it circulating throughout the entire surgery while they have the heart stopped. I believe speaking is related to any job anybody chooses to do. Speaking is involved in your everyday routine. You are always going to speak to somebody and that is even like public speaking. You are always going to communicate with somebody whether it is one person or a group. Perfusionist’s are involved with speaking in their everyday routine:
A perfusionist should be a people-oriented person as they will not only be working with patients, but they will also be working directly with the nursing staff, anesthesiologists, cardiac and pulmonary surgeons, and surgical technicians. (L. Hepfer, 2013.)
After reading an article and seeing what L. Hepfer said, it sounds like speaking is very involved with a job like perfusion.
At the end of the day, a perfusionist may be in surgery, getting equipment set up, or even in a surgical team meeting, but public speaking is involved with all of it.
