My Place Within My Community
I belong to a relatively tightknit community within my subdivision. Here, everybody knows everybody! Whenever a neighbor is in need, we drop what we’re doing to go and help them. Simple as it may be, that’s just the way things work around here. I can define my place within this community in a couple words: friend and leader. Recently, a neighbor of mine was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. The whole subdivision was shocked. In her time of need, I knew the right thing to do would be to reach out to her and offer my help, although being a seventeen year old high school student, I didn’t think I had much to offer. However, I had just passed my road test and had my license. I offered her rides to and from her chemotherapy sessions at Beaumont Hospital. On the rides there, we talked about everything, and I knew she felt like she had a friend in me. I did not want compensation for my actions; I just wanted to be there for someone in need.
Also within my community, I organized a Rouge River Rescue cleanup project. There is a small creek in the commons area of our neighborhood that needed a serious cleanup. I recruited a group of my peers and sent out flyers to all the houses in our subdivision. When the day came to clean up the creek, the turnout of people who came to help was astounding! I consider myself a leader; I saw a problem and found a solution. My place within this community will always be defined as a friend and a leader. I don’t think it takes much to make a difference; you just have to be involved and motivated to do

Peck explains the word "community" as something that we tend to overuse without ever truly understanding it; almost making it meaningless. We have a tendency to relate ourselves to our neighbors, without having ever actually talked to them. I recently moved into a rental house close to school. I have been living there a few months and have only so much as spoken to one of my neighbors. This one neighbor, coincidentally, happens to be my landlord. While geographically this is an area where many people and I have…

I am a church member and musician at Revival Tabernacle. By being a musician, I find myself working with the talents and ideas of others as we come together on one accord and produce a skilled sound. I am also currently a student at Jones County High School. Being a student, I am a service to other organizations at school by being an usher for Graduation and also the Chorus Department. My recent involvement in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and DECA has enriched my knowledge of the business sector and how we all come together as a society and produce great ideas. In these organizations, I was able to be a holiday helper at local Nursing Homes to bring cheer to the residents. From my participation in these organizations and activities, I learned that it is better to give than receive. I was able to gain experience with dealing with the public and also give people a sense of comfort and love.…

I haven’t been involved with ME to WE but I have been included in other community/school events. I went to the ‘YRDSB OUR VOICE: THE WAY FORWARD’ conference. This conference was very beneficial because it was a student-lead conference. It allowed us, students to use our voice and speak up. At the conference, I realized how important it is to use your voice in a positive way to help people. You don’t only need to use your voice; you can get your message out in any way, media, arts or verbally. I learned that student voice is important because, we are the ones who are the future to making our world a better place. When I went back to school, after the conference, I had a tiny activity planned with my class about bullying and speaking up. With my teacher’s permission, I explained the activity to my class and they did the activity. Even though there were 2 months left of school, I could see that my classmates were starting to speak up. Even though I only had an impact on my class, it’s better than nothing.…

In my community, I have displayed a great amount of service. In school, I am a peer helper during my P.E. hour to help the kids with disabilities perform P.E. like any other high school student would. I also went to a prom for kids with disabilities at my church as a date/escort for one of the kids. Over the summer I worked as a respite worker for a week to help a young girl with Down syndrome at a church camp. Also, one of my favorite times of the year is when I get the opportunity to volunteer at the softball Special Olympics. Because a lot of these kids and adults do not have the ability to perform these tasks on their own, I become a dependent companion for them to lean on. I show my leadership by doing what is right if someone were to make fun of them, and treating them like I would treat a friend. This all wraps into the patriotism for our country. I do not do these actions to just call myself patriotic; I do it because I enjoy to and believe that it is my duty as a good…

I like volunteering because I enjoy helping people. I would like to join the National Junior Honor Society because I like school, I like to study and I would like to do more volunteer work. One of the things I did was volunteer in the World Refugee Day. I drew designs on people’s hands with henna, I also distributed water to the people who were there to watch, and I gave raffle tickets to the people who were participating in the program.…

In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…

Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. We chose the beach across from Water Gut. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. I volunteer and participate with the Junior Meteorology Club of Elena L. Christian Junior High School. I help with certain fundraisers such as; bake sales, car washes and collecting donations. I like to be there for people who are in need because it shows people that I am a caring and loving person. I also volunteered at the Agriculture Fair of 2010. I was helping out the Virgin Islands Police Department booth, assisting the police cadets, police officers, lieutenants and as well as the commissioner. Both my mom and I, we donated funds for Haiti at the VIPD in Frederiksted.…

Near the holiday, we set up a Halloween party for the homeless at Morning Star and the neighborhood children. In this event, food was passed out to those people sitting there cold and alone. Some people even donated clothing to them, so by the end of the night, they were filled with warmth which came apparent from the smiles they flashed. I have learned to uphold a greater respect for others than I did four years ago. Some people may hold less respect for these people by the little that they are able to offer, but I gained even more because they’re there accepting help when in their position and some wouldn’t even show their faces. It wasn’t much that we were able to change, but our small deed made them happy even if it was just for a night which they expressed their bountiful…

Communities can be found everywhere and can be created anywhere. You may be unaware of it, but you are part of a community not only based on your location, but also based on your lifestyle, your religion, your heritage, your education, or your abilities. As Hewitt once said, “Community provides a psychological world and a place of identification for its members.” Identifying yourself with a particular community may be easier than it sounds. Knowing only a little about yourself can help you find a group that will help you help yourself. Knowing that you are strongly pro-life will allow you to be welcomed into the Students for Life club on campus. Knowing your religious values and beliefs will let you relate easier to others who feel the same way. A group of people with something in common is a priority point of community. As Hewitt says, “Communities are based on a great many different grounds not solely on the basis of territory.” Though finding something in common with the people around you may not be easy, a fact that will be easy to see is that all these people are in the same vicinity and therefore are a community due to location. The people who live on your block or in your neighborhood are part of your community also. However, communities are generalized as well as specified. A general location, such as a city, can be called a community, but specified within that city are many sub-communities, such as school communities or business communities. To be even more specific, schools have clubs and organizations which can also be called communities, or business buildings may have many different companies and each individual company could be a…
