My Personal Learning Styles
Like most people, I can definitely say there have been times in my life when learning was a chore. I can remember looking at the clock on the wall watching the second hand tick away while feverishly tried to grasp the material before me. On the other hand, I can clearly recall times when I was eager to learn. I looked forward to the experience, almost counting the hours until my next opportunity to dive into the scheduled material. As the years have passed from my early days of learning until now, I have realized there is a key word that defines my learning style: scheduled. I am a schedule person. From as far back as I can remember, I have always envied the organized person. The one who had a schedule for everything. The one who knew everything and knew where to go to get what they did not readily possess. I have studied temperament types and learning styles in great detail, primarily trying to find new ways of understanding others and myself. At one point, I took the Strong Interest Inventory Test to try to find out my personal learning style. In an interpretive report following the testing, Allen Hammer and Judith Grutter explained:
Your score on the Learning Environment scale suggests that you are interested in applied or practical problems. You may be most interested in short-term training that can teach you practical skills that will help you prepare for a particular job. You probably learn best in settings where you can learn by experience, not through books or lectures (11). The Skills For Professional Development textbook provided four distinct tests to help me define my learning style even further. Test 1: Peak and Valley Learning Times (University of Phoenix 74), confirmed to me that I learn best in the early morning hours. Early morning is definitely a peak learning time for me. I can frequently be found early in the morning with a book and a cup of coffee. I wake up and my brain seems to be already engaged. Saturday mornings afford me the

The questionnaire asks a series of questions which help the individual to identify their preferred learning habits. The answers to these questions are scored and the person then falls into one of four categories which is the learning style best suited to them based on the answers they have given. Honey and Mumford put forward four main learning styles; Reflectors, theorists, pragmatists and activists, each with their own characteristics. Reflectors prefer to learn through activities which allow them to observe, think and review situations. They like to collect data and mind map. Theorists prefer to think problems through step by step using lectures, systems, case studies etc. Quite often they are perfectionists. Pragmatists enjoy applying new ideas and techniques to actual practise to test their use. They prefer learning through lab work, field work and observations rather than lectures or lengthy discussions. They are practical and like concepts which can be applied to their own jobs. Activists enjoy new things and like challenges. They prefer to learn through activities role-playing, problem solving and small group discussions. They are unlikely to prepare for their learning or to review it afterwards. This was Honey and Mumford’s interpretation of learning styles theory however…

This is true, because I love movies like The Notebook, Walk the Line, and Atonement. Carolyn Kalil’s True Colors Personality Quiz has taught me that I am more adventurous and restless than serious and punctual. The Learning Styles Inventory and Learning Styles Descriptions by Solomon and Felder has taught me that I am a reflective, sensing, visual, learner. As a reflective learner, I prefer to learn by myself at first to make sure that I understand the material. It is also extremely hard for me to get through a lecture where all I do is take notes. I am not able to sit and memorize the material, I have to read the information over and over again. I also like being able to get up and do things during class. I am also a sensing learner, which means that I like learning the clear cut facts and solving problems with the best given method. In high school, I was best at history, because it was memorizing facts. There were no theories that would hinder my learning process. I also liked calculus, because I was able to solve the problems with the best given methods and I could do them step by step. The best way for me to learn is to relate the material to the real…

Upon completion of the learning style inventory exercises, I gained awareness of the learning styles that will continue to be discussed throughout the duration of this course. Being introduced to the different types of learning styles are of vital importance to me as a student, as it helps me discover ways in which I learn. The purpose of this exercise is to help us identify ourselves in accordance to when we feel successful at learning, and by that, what techniques we use and how we apply them to learn to the best of our ability. We were instructed to fill out various interrelated ideas on how people learn, and based on our personal opinions; rate them on a scale of one through four, with four being the strongest answer. We then would total up our answers, in each of the following categories: Concrete Experience (Feeling), Reflective Observation (Watching), Abstract Conceptualization (Thinking), and Active Experimentation (Doing) and represent our total numbers with drawing four connecting lines to create a formation of a “kite.” In every aspect of the grid within the learning style graph, the illustration of my ‘kite’ hit all the designation points to create a perfect four-sided kite. The numbers in which my lines connected to were all almost, or hit right at the peak of each side of the grid. This essentially means that for each learning style criteria, my totals scored high and were ranked a vast majority of fours.…

My plan is simple, but requires consistency in order for it to work. I will check the syllabus for whatever class I am currently in at the beginning of each week, and based on what is due that week, I will go through my schedule and plan my days out accordingly. I have found it easiest to do as much work as possible in the beginning of the week, so as not to feel pressured and rushed to finish once I get close to the due date, so I will continue to do that. Really, I suppose consistency IS my plan. So much of it has to do with time management, and I will have to ensure that I am giving myself enough time each day to check in and respond to discussion questions and my classmates, plus turn my assignments in early or on time. Nobody else is to blame if I drop the ball on turning in an assignment, or mismanage my time. I need to make sure to prioritize my class work above many of the other trivial things that tend take up time in my day. Technology and the Internet are amazing resources and necessary tools to have when in school but also can be a major…
