Abstract
Child hood obesity is becoming a major problem in the United States of America ,as a country in whole we are obese with 30% adults and 17% children (age 2-19) being obese. Obesity and being overweight are two different factors. Obesity is a BMI (body mass index) at or above the 95th percentile for the children of the same sex and age. Overweight is a BMI at or above the 85th percentile and lower than the 95th percentile of children of the same age a sex. This is measured by using the child’s weight and height BMI is not a measurement of body fat directly it is a ball park figure of body fatness. This social problem has been an issue for years in the USA, but what as a country can we do about it? Well, Michelle Obama (first lady of United States) suggests we can make a change. Mrs. Obama took things to a political point of view implementing the “LETS MOVE” campaign. This campaign challenged children, parents, and schools to make a change in nutrition and also life style. This is a start , however, child obesity is not a issue we can tackle overnight this new moment will take time.
Effects of Obesity on children
Obesity is a very serious health issues, in children this could cause high cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea. This could also have effects on the child’s mental and social well-being, with low self-esteem and social discrimination being commonly associated with child obesity. In the generation that we live in today there is more obese children than ever this could be due to the factor that there are more single parent homes. Mothers are forced to be the mom and the dad, the provider and nurturer, so when its dinner time and the parent has worked a long hard day it’s easier for them to order a pizza instead of cooking home mad and healthy meal for the child. Other factors that can contribute to child hood obesity are environmental, genetics, social factors, illnesses, and medication. In order to execute a successful intervention it must address all of the following issues not just some. Environmental factors such as spending more time in front of the computer and TV can be replaced with more outdoor or even indoor activities, also making the home meal healthier and less fattening. Genetics is something that we have very little control over, but by stressing to the parent that the child will inhabit the eating and exercise of the parent will increase in home participation. Social factors these are the factors that we can do the most about, children without the proper education on the issue and not having the proper guide lines to follow.
Obesity Prevention and Control: Behavioral Interventions to Reduce Screen Time
This intervention is based on the idea that less TV time and out doors or family time will reduce the number of children affected by obesity.
